What is Symbolism?
● Symbolism is a figure of speech meaning it
is not tied to its literal definition. The actions
of a character or the description of
something that has a deeper meaning
therefore making it a symbol. Symbolism can
help authors give more meaning to their
work. (a hidden meaning)
● Descriptive word phrases are a group of
words to help visualize, describe, define, or
explain information about people, places,
things, situations, or actions.
Examples
● Symbolism: the “iron circle” around
people’s necks can symbolize a
chain. The chain, during that time
frame, can be a symbol of slavery.
● Descriptive word phrases: in
chapter 22, “a hot thing” is a phrase
used to describe Beloved’s
emotions.
