Mrs.

Sen’s Close Reading, SN Entry 6, 3/9/22

On page 62, Mrs. Sen mentions a brief background on the knife she uses to cut the

vegetables and fruit for dinner. She mentions her family and village, how it was always so loud

and lively, but now “‘Here, in this place where Mr. Sen has brought me, [she] cannot sometimes

sleep in so much silence.’” indicating that her world has gotten smaller. Her culture was built on

having a community, in America, everyone is incredibly independent. Now that it is just her and

Mr. Sen, she needed Eliot in her life, probably as much as he needed to have an adult around. We

can assume that’s why Mrs. Sen took up the babysitting position in the first place. It’s also

interesting to note that Mr. Sen brought her to this new country. It wasn’t her decision, and now

she has no family, friends, or a general community.
