Schirmer, selling agent) $.85 Upper Elementary He certainly did. He starts innocently in F, 6/8; sneaks up to F sharp, 4/4; and ends with some very pry 3-part cavorting in G, 6/8. This is very good recital ‘material. COUPLES ONLY Piano Duets by Roger Grove Summy- Birchard Company $1.95 Upper Elementary ‘This is a pleasant collection that gives each pianist such playing to do so the element of danger is reduced. Pianists’ problems proverbially multiply when silence sets in. There is much rhythmic blending and unison which gives to the music a consistent flow very helpful in building confidence in the early years. ‘TWO AT ONE PIANO Early Intermediate Duets by Jon George Summy-Birchard Company $1.95 These seven pleasing duets would be excellent sight- reading material for the studio because they make much use of broken triads or step-wise melody within a five-note range. Patterns are frequently repeated and most of the playing is on the white keys. The parts are well-matched with each having plenty to do. The mood varies from the vigor of ‘Village Dance" and ‘Trolley ‘Song’ to the pensive 6/8 lilt in ‘Forest Flower" and “Pastorale."" I particularly like ‘On the Hacienda" because of its habanera beat in Secondo. MEET SAMBA Piano Duets by A. Rafael C. Santos Lee Roberts Music Publications, Inc. (G. Schirmer, selling agent) $1.00 Upper Intermediate to Lower Advanced (because of rhythm) This is a double duet—two pieces for two people. Of the two sambas one is an arrangement of a Brazilian folk song, the other speaks for itself in the title, “Dorian Samba." They are strongly contrasting in ‘mood and use different patterns of a samba beat both of which are irresistible. The music is preceded by an excellent presentation of a simple samba beat with much tapping and counting in just the right ways. This is fun but the pieces are even more—one page each of pure rhythmic joy. Secondo has the samba beat in each under Primo's melodic line, syncopated too. Sugges- tions for improvisation and rhythmic variants extend the challenge beyond the printed page. A’ GIVE AND TAKE One Pian, tou ttands by Michael Shot Myklas Press Volumes 1 and 2 $2.00 each volume Upper Intermediate to Lower Advanced ‘These books are ideal for two pianists in the teen years who can move rapidly around the keyboard, who can enjoy the “give and take” of ensemble, and who can count in sound or silence. Parts are fairly equal although in Volume | the interest scale is a bit weighed toward Primo. Secondo is very busy counting when he's short on notes. In Volume 1 the lively ‘Bakers Kneading Bread" gives him a good banjo part. There two enticing blues in this set, and a prize ‘Tidbits,”” a gem of a scherzo full of very tricky entrances and disappearances, is the most fun of |. Volume 2 is a bouquet of bright, fast, jazzy pieces with two quiet, blue insets, “Rainy Day" and “Alone.” There are seven winners in each of these volumes.
