comprehend vocabulary using suffixes, synonyms, antonyms; sequence the letters of the
alphabet, to understand alphabetic order; With assistance use resources to find the meaning of
unknown words encountered in text: Build vocabulary using pictures or symbols( Vocabulary
Development)

2. Objectives:
SWBAT + Bloom’s verb

Students will be able to discuss 5 reasons that they matter.

Students will be able to create a self-portrait.

Students will be able to identify the words “gassy”, “lonely”, and” pest”.

3. Materials/Equipment:

-Five reason why I matter! (paper) student will write down 5 things that make them special.

-You Matter! (paper)- Students will draw a picture of themselves.

-Crayons

-Markers

-Pencils
-Mirrors

4. Teaching:
A. -Plan for reading the book is to teach children no matter what
obstacles they go through if they are tall or small they will overcome.

- What does lonely mean to you?

-When everyone thinks you’re a pest what does that mean to you?

-Has anyone ever told you you’re gassy?

-What does it mean in the story the first to go and the last. You Matter
So, if we win at something or lose something do we still matter?

B. Plan for extension activity:

-Today we are going to draw a picture of ourselves and write down 5 reasons that you matter.

-Pass each student two sheets of paper, one containing a mirror where they can draw
themselves and list 5 reasons they matter.

-Pass out mirrors to students.

-Pass out all the materials such as markers, crayons.

-Go around and look at the illustrations then ask them their 5 reasons on why they matter.

5. Closure:

Have each child come up with the self -portrait and have them discuss the 5 reasons that they
matter.

-Give positive feedback on their self-portrait and the 5 reasons were great.

-Ask the children what they learned from the story?

Today we talked about 5 reasons why we matter and tomorrow we will talk about Near or Far,
Big or small. Encouraging students to draw something they can hear, feel, something far away,
something that matters to you. Lastly, draw something small that matters to you.
