SN Week 11 Synthesis Lesson & Activity

Q: How are summarizing and synthesizing different?
A: Synthesis is different from summarizing because it takes multiple sources and tries to draw a
broader conclusion. Whereas summarizing is just repeating the information from a source
without the author putting their twist on it.

These three articles with varying levels of expertise discuss a significant change growing in the
medical community. The development of race-neutral medical algorithms has the potential to
transform medical care for everyone. Roni Caryn Rabin of the NYT takes the New England
Journal of Medicine’s findings and makes it easier for non-medical professionals to understand
through her use of simple language. The HSS document is a perfect tool for in-practice medical
professionals who are not a part of developing these new forms of diagnosis methods. Its diction
and contents are more orientated to practicing medical professionals learning to change a part of
their process.
