NOTIFICATION LETTER

To : All Parents/Guardians,

Iron Deficiency Anemia (IDA) is a global public health problem affecting both developing and
developed countries occurring at all stages of the life cycle. It is considered to be one of the most
important contributing factors to the global burden of diseases (World Health Organization, 2002). It
affects the lives of millions of women and children resulting to poor cognitive development, increase
maternal mortality and decrease work capacity.

As a result of the 2013 National Nutrition Survey (NNS) conducted by the Food and Nutrition
Research Institute (FNRI), 1 out of 10 girls aged 13-19 years old suffer from anemia and are vulnerable to
anemia because of their menstruation, rapid growth and increased iron requirement.

To address this health concern, the Department of Health (DOH) in coordination with the
Department of Education (DepED) will be conducting a nationwide Weekly Iron with Folic Acid (WIFA)
supplementation program for school children grades 7-10 females. Iron Folic Acid supplements will be
given every Monday of the months of July, August and September as first round and January,
February and March for the second round.
