Mount Rainier National Park general facts


• Located in the southwestern region of Washington state, Mount Rainier National Park
was established in 1899.

• The park is the United States’ fifth national park.

• The park encompasses 364 square miles of land.

• Mount Rainier stands tall at 14,410 feet and is within the top 30 highest summits in North
America.

• Mount Rainier is an active volcano, but it’s been over 1,000 years since it last erupted.

• The park is home to a variety of habitats and life zones that provide hospitable
environments to a wide range of animals.

• There are approximately 280 animal species that can be found within the park.

• Many of the animals are protected by the state or federal government or are considered
sensitive species.

• The park has over 260 miles of hiking trails spread throughout each of its five developed
areas.

• Campgrounds can be found throughout the park and are generally available for use from
late May to early Oct.

• The use of non-motorized boating is permitted except on Frozen Lake, Reflection Lakes,
Ghost Lake, Shadow Lake and Tipsoo Lake.

• Fishing is permitted, but visitors are required to follow the fishing rules and regulations
set in place to protect the native fish species and aquatic ecosystems.

• Ranger-led programs are held all over the park and offer opportunities for children and
adults alike to educate themselves on topics such as the park’s history, the local flora and
fauna and how they can help contribute to park conservation.
