Perception and factors affecting perception

Perception can be divided into two types:-

 Visual Perception:
 Auditory Perception

Our perceptions shape our world based on the lens through which we view it. To take that a
step further, situations in and of themselves are in a sense meaningless. It is you that brings
the meaning to it. The Universe shapes and moves itself according to the way in which you
perceive it. This is much like how two people can witness the same event and have very
different experiences of it.

Factors Affecting Perception:-

o External Factor:

 Perceiver
 Target
 Situation
o Internal Factor:

 Sensory Limits and Threshold

 Psychological
Sub-Processes of Perception:
1. Stimulus: The process of perception begins when an individual is confronted with a stimulus.
For example, personal interaction with the manager works as stimulus for employees to work
more efficiently.
2. Registration: The stimulus is perceived by individuals using their sensory organs. This is referred
to as registration of stimulus. In the above example, the employee registers the advice of his
manager using his ears.
3. Interpretation: Interpretation involves attaching a certain meaning to the registered stimulus.
Individual’s attitude, personality, values and beliefs play a major role in interpreting a stimulus.
In the above example, the employee interprets the advice of his man- ager by attaching some
meaning to it.
4. Reaction: The final sub-process is the resultant behavior of an individual after interpreting a
stimulus. The response may be overt in nature such as an action, or it may be covert in nature
such as a change in the attitude.
