BVNA Council
Elections 2012
Have your say on who’s representing your Association and nominate
someone today!

Voting closes on 30th April 2012

The British Veterinary Nursing Association would like to remind all full members of the Association to
consider standing for election onto BVNA Council.

Important attributes for candidates are a strong commitment to promoting the ideals of the BVNA as well
as the veterinary nursing profession in general and a willingness to devote time and effort to representing
their fellow members.

Commenting on the nomination process, Claire Fraser, President of the BVNA, said “The BVNA Council is
committed to driving the Association forward but this can only be done with representatives who are fully
committed to representing the BVNA and its members. Your background is less important than your
ability to offer a real commitment to the Association and your fellow members. There is certainly a s
ignificant time commitment, but it is a very rewarding and enjoyable experience and it is seen as a way of
giving something back to a profession that we are all passionate about. It is also an opportunity to meet
other veterinary nurses from a wide range of backgrounds, to share thoughts and ideas on both a political
front and from a clinical perspective. I would urge anyone with an interest in the future of our profession
and our Association to stand as a BVNA Council Member.”

Any BVNA member, falling under the category ‘Qualified VN/RVN/EVN’, can nominate themselves.
Full details on the postal voting system are available via the BVNA website www.bvna.org.uk

Harness wounds
As with many parts of the developing world, a
major threat to equine welfare is the effect of poorly
designed pack and harness, combined with
overwork. This is clearly a problem that can be
prevented, and important initiatives in harness
design and production are already making steady
progress, not least by GHDT. One important step is
to replace the traditional mouth-piece (which can be
as inappropriate as a length of string or barbed wire)
with proper metal or rubber bits donated from the
UK. Padding is important (often in the form of
donated numnahs), but the real progress is made in
addressing the harness design, thus preventing the
sores from developing in the first place.
This involves working closely with the local harness
makers and traders.

Overall Impressions
Apart from anything this was a fantastic learning
experience for two young vets, who could not have
carried out the trip without the kind and dedicated
support of a number of sponsors. Both have now
returned to the UK to continue their shared goals in
improving animal welfare, and this will by no means
be their last trip to GHDT! Patrick plans to visit Egypt
in January to carry out harness workshops with local
harness-makers, in an effort to further reduce the
incidence of wounds.

out – it’s about what you have coming in, too. You want to make
sure that payment is settled quickly, accurately and as easy
as possible. That’s where accepting card payments can help
– giving you more certainty of what will be hitting your bank
account and when.

For small businesses, time is precious. By accepting card

payments, the time you spend processing invoices and queuing
at the bank can be far better utilised growing your business.

Strong Support for New

More than 400 practices, around ten per cent of
the UK total, joined a recent campaign run by
Virbac Animal Health to raise owner awareness of
the importance of prostate disease in dogs,
making it one of the company’s most successful
