A lot of people are watching Winter Olympic games on TV these days.

They are taking place in

Beijing, China. The Olympics are one of the most famous competitions all over the world and they
are held every 4 years. The competitors from almost every country come there to take a part in
competitions and try to win Gold Olympic Medal.
The first Summer Olympics were held in Athens, Greece in 1896 and since then they have been
held every 4 years across the world. Only in 1949 and 1944 there were no Olympics because of the
World War 2. The first Winter Olympics were in France in1924. They are held for sports practiced
on snow and ice. The original five Winter Olympic sports were bobsleigh, curling, ice hockey,
skiing and skating.
My parents were born in the country called Yugoslavia. The capital city was Belgrade, and Serbia,
the country where I was born and where I live, was one of the Republics in Yugoslavia,
In 1984, the Winter Olympics took place in Sarajevo, in the south of Yugoslavia. Around Sarajevo,
there are several beautiful mountains, where Olympic Games were held. People from all over the
world as well as from Yugoslavia came there to watch the Games but also to see how they improved
the ski slopes and to stay in the Holiday Inn Hotel which was ‘wooow’ and built specially for that
occasion. Soon after that the war started and there was no more Yugoslavia.
That is what my parents have told me. Since then there have been many international competitions
and tournaments in Serbia but not the Olympics. In Serbia we can’t expect to have Winter
Olympics, but I hope we will have Summer Olympics one day.
