OVERALL COMMENTS AND REFLECTIONS:

Mia Buljan (teacher) engaged her 2nd-grade learners in a number talk working
with the problem 18 + 32. She challenged her students to identify different ways
to solve the problem, then engaged them in sharing and defending their thinking.
Some students identify that working with groupings of 10 was helpful to them.

In the second half of the math workshop, Mia Buljan worked with a student who
had a misconception about how to use the ten sticks to represent the quantities
in the problem. Mia asked, “how were you counting them?” The student
explained that she first used the ten sticks to represent tens, then switched over
to using the ten sticks to represent ones.

After the students represented their thinking using tools, Mia asked them to use
whiteboards to write down their strategies. She asked a struggling student: “Is
this a ‘put-together’ problem or a ‘take-apart’ problem?” and worked with the
students to articulate their answers aloud.
When they did, several students caught the errors in their own thinking. Once the
students moved to the whiteboards, they shared the drawings that represented
their thinking in adding the quantities.
