I wish to remind you all of the policy: POLCPCM021 Chaperones for intimate examination and care.
This is a recommendation from a recent SI Investigation where a patient made an allegation that a
staff member had assaulted her. The patient had a catheter inserted during her admission but there is
no documentation that a chaperone was offered.
A chaperone must be offered if you are examining a patients breasts, rectum or breasts. The
chaperone should be a health care professional or CSW and should be specifically asked to act in that
capacity. A chaperone should be offered for urethral catheterisation. Document that a chaperone was
offered. Record the name of the chaperone in the notes. I encourage you all to read the policy for
yourselves. It is on Q-pulse.
