How can I find a good topic for a master's thesis?

Originally Answered: How do I decide on a topic for a master’s thesis?

1. Your research sponsor tells you what your topic is.
2. Your research supervisor tells you what your topic is.
3. You start reading about a problem and how someone has solved it in a particular field.
You make a plan to look at that problem and solution in a different field.
4. You read the literature in an area of interest. You develop mind maps for the areas you
are reading about. You draw the connections between the entries on your mind map.
Your natural curiosity kicks in and you wonder why no one has studied the relationship
between two of the entries on your mind map. You pose a research question that
connects those two areas. You show your research adviser about your discovery of a
gap in the literature. Your adviser says, “Wow! That’s a great topic for your thesis. Do
it!”
