(1) Stimuli such as pain, stress (physical/psychological),
pyrogens, epinephrine, histamine, hypoglycemia, and hypotonia cause the release of corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the hypothalamus.
(2) In the anterior pituitary gland, CRH stimulates the
release of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which stimulates the secretion of glucocorticoids and androgens in the adrenal cortex. Glucocorticoids inhibit the secretion of CRH and ACTH via a negative feedback loop.
