The Winepress is a short story written by Josef Essberger that is set in France.

The point of story is about

a man that tells a tragic backstory of a delicious wine. The story starts off with rich people enjoying their
food around a table. The host, Charles Jousselin de Gruse, is serving his best wines to his guests even
though he actually dislikes their company. The talk turns to wine discussion and much comment is made
on the Bordeaux that he is serving, which then the guest declared that it is the best wine they’ve tasted.
After interest from his guests, De Gruse began to tell the story of where the wine came from.

So the story is about the son of two vineyard owners travels to Madagascar and falls in love with a local
girl. They marry, and enjoy three years together in the tropics before he brings her back to France after
pierre’s parents death. He runs the vineyard but soon his wife becomes very jealous of the other women
working there. Because of that, they fight for years and begin to despise each other. One day, the son is
making grape juice with his electric winepress when his wife comes in and attacks him with a knife. He
pushes his wife and she accidentaly slips into the winepress. Tragically, she is minced into the machine
but then he leaves the machine on and left his wife away. After the deed is finished he barrels the juice
and soon bottles it into a wine. The story finishes with the wine winning many awards.

The story returns to the table and the guests are stunned by the tale. One guest asks if De Gruse bought
any of the wine and he says that he actually did. Another guest realises what he could be drinking and
asks De Gruse, “you don’t mean to tell me we’re drinking this damned woman now, d’you?” De Gruse
looks at him and says, “Heaven forbid, General,” “Everyone knows that the best vintage should always
come first.”Meaning that De Gruse is trying to teach his guests a lesson and so, he tells them the story of
the wine that they are drinking. The guests are surprised and disgusted at the same time.
