Reflection

For the April seminar, our class discussed the expectations for the e-portfolio and how to

meet the requirements for each competency. For the remaining time of the seminar, we had a

guest lecture speak about cybersecurity. For the first part of the seminar, students had the

opportunity to discuss any questions they had regarding competency requirements. Professor

O'Hagan used previous student's e-portfolios to demonstrate what we can expect to complete

throughout the next couple of semesters. I found this part of the seminar extremely helpful

because I was able to visualize how students from previous years designed their e-portfolios and

which artifacts they used to demonstrate that they completed the competency. Having students

complete small parts of their e-portfolio for each seminar will help keep them ahead and avoid

issues before graduation next year.

A guest lecture taught the second part of the lecture; the speaker was Elliot Jones, the

Chief Information Security Officer for Keck Medicine and the University of Southern California.

I enjoy having guest lecturers like Elliot come to speak to the class because it allows me to see

the different career paths a person can take in the field of health informatics and data analytics. A

lot of what the guest speaker talked about related to topics we have discussed in other classes; his

experiences also gave our class a unique perspective on cybersecurity and its importance. Elliot

Jones talked about how there have been significant security breaches in companies like Blue

Shield and devastating those breaches can be to a company. Although I am leaning more towards

a research career, I think cybersecurity is exciting and essential in protecting patient's protected

health information.
