HCI 548: HCI Seminar

Professor Boone

March 10, 2022

Reflection

For this seminar there were two parts, the first consisted of a discussion regarding race in

the healthcare field and the second was a guest lecturer. Prior to seminar, students were asked to

read an article on how race correction affects risk assessment and treatment. There has been a

debate regarding whether or not race is biological or social in healthcare. These conversations are

important to have during seminar because they can help move our healthcare system closer to

providing equal and equitable care to patients. It was great to hear different viewpoints from

students who are clinical and share their experience with race as a factor when providing care to

a patient.

The second part of seminar was conducted by our guest lecturer Deven O’Crump. She

talked about her career journey and how she landed in the position that she is in today. As we are

approaching graduation, it is becoming stressful to start looking for jobs and applying. I found

this lecturer helpful because her experience is similar to how I am currently feeling about

applying for jobs and she gave great about to approach it. I have used some of the advice she has

given with using certain key words in my resume and have also reached out to teachers and

friends about potential job prospects.
