Field Observation Reflection

During my observation of the first-grade class, I learned so much from my cooperating

teacher about teaching and students. On the first day of my observation, I immediately felt

welcomed. The teacher and students greeted me with open arms, and I could tell that they were

comfortable with each other. The first thing they do in the morning is greet each other and the

teacher allows the students to chat in the chat box before class begins. I noticed that she greets

students individually, which gives a sense of involvement. I know that it is difficult to teach and

learn during this time, and the teacher did a great job of adapting to the new environment.

The teacher teaches lessons in a way that caters to students’ preferred learning styles.

From the math lessons that I observed, I noticed that she asks students what they think the

answer is and how they reached it. She writes down each student’s methods and encourages them

to share. Along with this, she uses objects such as small cubes in math lessons for students who

learn better visually. I think it is important to acknowledge these different learning styles as a

teacher to make students feel included and learn better.

When it comes to student behavior, most of the students are well behaved. They know

when to speak and when not to speak. When a student interrupts class, the teacher will remind

them to speak after the lesson is over. If a student shows negative behavior, she will ask them to

talk to her about what is bothering them after class. While observing there was only a few

instances of this. When I interviewed the teacher, she mentioned that praising students for

following the rules usually encourages them to continue to behave well.

Overall, I enjoyed and learned a lot from this experience. I got a glimpse of what it is like

to be a teacher to a specific age group. This experience also encouraged me to want to teach in

the same age group. From the learning styles to the methods used, I feel like I can incorporate

what I learned into my teaching.
