Civil Rights/Body Biography Lesson Plan

I. Describe the Class


Grade: 11
Number of Students: 29 (3 Students with a Learning Disability and 2 Gifted Students)

II. Subject/Skill
History
History Skill: Identifying key figures of the Civil Rights movement and the impact they
had on Civil Rights.

III. Objective
Students will be able to:
Identify key figures and their contributions to the Civil Rights Movement
Collaborate with their peers to research and create a body biography

IV. Procedures
1. AIM Question: How did U.S. policies around race affect the lives of Americans?
Key Terms: Segregation, Civil Rights, Inequality, Amendment, Brown v Board
2. Students need to know about inequality following the Civil War as well as the court case
Plessy v. Ferguson.
3. Following the lecture on the Civil Rights Movement, I will show students an example of
what I expect their projects to look like.
4. Scaffolding will be very apparent as students may have to make connections to post Civil
War policies and practices that limited the rights of non-white Americans. Students will
be told that they have the class period that the assignment is assigned as well as the entire
class next time they return to complete their Body Biography.
5. Independent student practice will be students beginning their assignments.

Butcher Paper
Markers
Colored Pencils
Crayons

VI. Grouping Structures


Students will get into groups with 4-5 students and begin to work on their assignment in the
classroom. Students are not expected to meet up out of school due to allocated time given to
them.

VII. Modifications
All information (PowerPoints, Rubric, Instructions for assignment) will be available for students
via Canvas. I will encourage students to ask questions in front of the class, privately, or via
email. I am also willing to print out the instructions and rubric for the student and make any
adjustments as need be such as changing font size or the font type.

VIII. Assessment
6. There is no closing activity. Students will begin to choose their figure/group as well as
begin splitting up the work for this assignment.
7. Homework for this assignment is to begin research and plan how they are going to
design their body biography.
