ACURITE ATLAS (7-in-1) OUTDOOR DEVICE

MODEL 06059

INTRODUCTION

7 FEATURES BUILT INTO 1 SENSOR

Temperature, Humidity, Wind Speed, Wind Direction, Rainfall, UV, and Light Intensity

Unlike regional weather predictions from sources like the news or online, AcuRite forecasting products
rely on sensors that collect organic data right from your backyard. AcuRite's sensor-based weather stations track
specific sets of weather-related variables, like changes in temperature, humidity, and barometric pressure to
generate a forecast with pinpoint accuracy.

The AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor is designed to be easy to install and use, without compromising any
of the professional weather tracking features you want. It operates wirelessly and contains a temperature/humidity
sensor, self-emptying rain collector for measuring rainfall, anemometer, a wind vane, and a Light/UV sensor. The
anemometer measures wind speed, and the wind vane measures wind direction. The AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1)
sensor is battery-powered and features three solar panels for powering an internal aspirating fan. The internal fan
will assist in drawing ambient air through to reduce the heating effects of solar radiation, resulting in a more
accurate air temperature measurement.

STEP-BY-STEP INSTALLATION DIRECTIONS:

1. Remove the battery cover located on the bottom of the sensor.

2. Locate the A-B-C switch inside the battery compartment. Set the A-B-C switch to A, B or C. Be sure to note
the channel that the A-B-C switch is set to.***
3. Insert 4 AA batteries into the sensor, following the polarity (+/-) diagram in the battery compartment. We
do not recommend using heavy-duty or rechargeable batteries. View the battery guidelines below. Close
the battery compartment cover.
4. Fasten the mounting base to a post or pole using the 4 longer screws included in the hardware bag.
5. Insert the mounting base into the hole on the bottom of the sensor. Make sure the arrows on the top of
the sensor are pointed in the proper direction and the bubble level is centered.
6. Fasten the sensor into the mounting base using the mounting knob. Tighten the knob until the sensor is
secure.
7. Remove and discard the Rain Gauge Stabilizer taped inside of the unit.

***High-Definition display units do not feature an A-B-C switch. You will need to confirm that the sensor that the
display unit connects to is on the same channel designation.

FOR ACCURACY: Clear data collected during the installation process. During the process of installation, internal
sensors may be triggered resulting in erroneous rainfall measurements. When the installation is complete, you
should clear erroneous data from the display console's memory if any is present. Please see your product's user
manual for instructions on clearing the memory. Your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Sensor is now ready to use!

INSTALLATION GUIDELINES

When deciding where to mount your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor, choose an open location with no
obstructions above or around the sensor for accurate rain and wind measurement. To ensure that your
Professional Weather Center performs at its best, follow these guidelines:

1. INSTALL AWAY FROM HEAT & HUMIDITY SOURCES

DO NOT place the sensor near localized heat sources like heaters, air conditioners, chimneys, or exhaust vents.
Install the sensor away from asphalt or concrete as these surfaces radiate heat from the sun. Also avoid installing
the sensor near pools, spas, or other bodies of water as these water sources may affect the accuracy of the
humidity.

2. INSTALL AWAY FROM SPRINKLER HEADS

DO NOT install the sensor where it will be directly sprayed by a sprinkler system, this will affect the rainfall
measurement accuracy and may force water into the housing.

3. WIND & RAIN OBSTRUCTIONS

DO NOT mount the sensor with obstructions above it, as this will ensure proper rainfall measurement. Also
consider a mounting location that has very little structures around the sensor, to ensure proper wind speed and
direction measurements.

4. INSTALLATION HEIGHT

DO mount the sensor at least 5 feet off the ground (higher is better for accurate wind measurements) in an open
area NO FURTHER than 330 feet (100 meters) from the display console and/or AcuRite Access®. A typical
installation would involve mounting the bracket to a secured length of 2 x 4 or 4 x 4 wood (not included). A length
of 3/4 inch schedule 40 or 80 PVC pipe or a steel pole with an outer diameter of one inch (not included) can also
be used instead of the mounting bracket.

*The National Weather Service recommends mounting the sensor 33 feet above the ground with no obstructions
within 100 feet for the most accurate wind speeds. We understand not all of our customers can mount this high.
You will receive an accurate reading for the location your sensor is mounted including all surroundings. If you are
comparing to a local news station, they are following the National Weather Service guidelines.

5. LEVEL INSTALLATION

DO install the sensor as level as possible to ensure accurate rain and wind measurements. Use the bubble level on
the top to ensure a level installation.

6. SOLAR CELL ORIENTATION

DO install the sensor onto the mounting bracket with the solar cell facing SOUTH. This is important to ensure that
the cell receives as much sun as possible, and also orients the wind direction properly. Install the sensor with the
solar cell facing south to properly orient the wind direction vane.

7. SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE

If you are located in the Southern Hemisphere, the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor will need to be mounted with
the solar cell facing NORTH and a calibration will need to be made to the wind vane. Please follow the steps in
the link below:

BATTERY GUIDELINES

We only recommend using lithium batteries during the time in which temperatures are below -4ºF (-20ºC)
for an extended period of time. When inserting batteries, follow the polarity (+/-) diagram in the battery
compartment. Only batteries of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to be used. It may take up to
20 minutes for the main unit to re-synchronize with the sensor when batteries are replaced.

DO NOT mix old and new batteries or types of batteries (alkaline/lithium). We do not recommend rechargeable
or heavy-duty batteries (gold, max, super, ultra, etc.). DO NOT short-circuit the supply terminals.

2
NOTE: The sensor features an integrated solar cell for collecting sunlight and converting it into usable power,
however, this feature is intended to EXTEND the life of the batteries you install. The sensor REQUIRES batteries to
operate, and will not function on solar power alone. BATTERIES MUST BE INSTALLED FOR THE SENSOR TO
OPERATE.

ACURITE ATLAS® (7-IN-1) SENSOR MAINTENANCE

1. HOW TO CLEAN THE SENSOR HOUSING

Clean the housing of the sensor with a damp cloth. DO NOT use abrasive cleaners or materials that will mark the
polished surfaces of the rain collection funnel or the solar panel - this could result in decreased performance and
reliability of the sensor.

2. HOW TO CLEAN THE RAIN COLLECTOR CUP

Occasionally remove the debris filter and empty it. This will filter out seeds and small sticks, etc. (the debris filter
is located within the rain funnel. Remove from the top gently by squeezing and pulling out).

3. HOW TO CLEAN THE WIND VANE & ANEMOMETER

Remove any foreign matter on the outside of the housing to allow for free movement of wind vane and
anemometer. If needed, you can use a small amount of spray lubricant, clear silicone, or graphite powder on the
anemometer for improved movement.

4. BATTERY MAINTENANCE

Clean the battery contacts located under the battery door on the bottom of the sensor. Remove batteries from
equipment that is not to be used for an extended period of time. Follow the polarity (+/-) diagram in the battery
compartment. Promptly remove dead batteries from the device. Dispose of used batteries properly. Only batteries
of the same or equivalent type as recommended are to be used. DO NOT mix old and new batteries or types of
batteries (alkaline/lithium). We do not recommend rechargeable or heavy-duty batteries (gold, max, super, ultra,
etc.). DO NOT short-circuit the supply terminals. We only recommend using lithium batteries during the time in
which temperatures are below -4ºF (-20ºC) for an extended period of time.

5. INSECT PREVENTION

In most cases, insects will not pose a problem to the sensor. However, in some instances, insects may cause
repeated obstructions to weather measurement by nesting in or contaminating the sensor. In these cases, it may
help to spray the housing with insect repellent to limit the problem. A small mothball can also be taped inside the
sensor away from any components.

TROUBLESHOOTING

1. AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Shows Inaccurate Temperature or Humidity

If your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) High Definition Display or My AcuRite® account is showing the incorrect or
inaccurate outdoor temperature or outdoor humidity readings from your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Weather Station,
please review the troubleshooting suggestions below.

These steps may also be performed if you are seeing the following error codes:

• -40 degrees
• 158 degrees
• 1% humidity
• 99% humidity

You would want to ensure the following first:

• Please verify that the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor is located away from sources of heat and moisture.
Nearby bodies of water may have an effect on the accuracy of the humidity readings.

3
• Make sure that the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor is mounted at least 5 feet off of the ground or any
other surface that may radiate heat. Roofing materials such as shingles or metals can radiate heat and
affect the temperature readings of the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor.
• The National Weather Service recommends mounting the sensor 33 feet above the ground with no
obstructions within 100 feet for the most accurate readings. We understand not all of our customers can
mount this high. You should receive an accurate reading for where it is mounted. If you are comparing to
a local news station, they typically follow the National Weather Service guidelines.
• Ensure that your display unit has connected to the correct sensor. If a neighbor also has a compatible
sensor within range of the display, it may have connected to their's instead. Please make sure that the
channel designation that you have physically set your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor to matches the
sensor that the display unit has connected to. You may need to change the channel designation that you
are using by performing the hard reset below when pairing to the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) display.

If readings are inaccurate or an error code is displayed:

• Please remove the batteries from the outdoor sensor.

• On the bottom of the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor, there is a vent cover that is held in place by 2 tabs.
Remove the vent. Under the vent, there is a cylinder that is clipped in with 2 tabs. This is the temperature
and humidity sensor. Remove the temperature and humidity sensor to expose the fan.
• Unplug the white cable connector and wait 20 seconds then plug the temperature and humidity sensor
back in. This will reset the temperature and humidity readings.
• Install the temperature and humidity board over the fan assembly, confirm the tabs do not block the fan
from spinning.
• Reinstall the batteries in the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor. Confirm the red light near the battery
compartment door flashes every 10 seconds.

2. AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Temperature Reading Too High

The sensor’s aspirating fan helps internal airflow to ensure accurate ambient temperature readings while the sun
is shining on the sensor. If the outdoor temperature readings are reporting too high, especially on hot or sunny
days, the internal aspirating fan may not be functioning properly.

When the fan is spinning, you will hear a humming noise. The following troubleshooting steps can be used if you
can hear the aspirating fan making a clicking sound or if the fan is loud when you are at least 10ft away from the
sensor.

To access the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) aspirating fan:

• Remove the batteries from the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor.

• On the bottom of the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor, there is a vent cover that is held in place by 2 tabs.
Remove the vent.
• Under the vent, there is a cylinder that is clipped in with 2 tabs. This is the temperature and humidity
sensor. Remove the temperature and humidity sensor to expose the fan.
• Verify the internal aspirating fan is running by visually inspecting the fan. Check the fan for debris, such
as insects or spider webs. If the fan is blocked by debris, most obstructions can be cleared with a gentle
puff of air. For a full video on cleaning the Atlas sensor, please see below.
• If no debris is blocking the fan, position the solar panels in direct sunlight. The fan should power on
immediately without any assistance (such as a nudge). Note: Artificial light, such as flashlights, cannot be
used as a substitute for actual sunlight. Also, overcast days may not be sunny enough to power on the
fan.
• Install the temperature and humidity board over the fan assembly, confirm the tabs do not block the fan
from spinning as they can stop the fan from spinning if not installed properly.

3. AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Inaccurate Wind Readings

4
If your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) High Definition Display or My AcuRite® account is reporting inaccurate wind speed
readings, please review the suggestions below. These steps can also be used if your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1)
Weather Station is reporting no wind speed readings at all.

If you are experiencing no wind speed readings:

• We have found that the wind cups can shift out of place during shipping. Please pull the wind cups
down, away from the wind vane until they click into place. The wind speed should register within 1-2
minutes. You may need to perform the hard reset included at the bottom of this article if the wind speed
does not update right away.
• Confirm the connectors are secure. Please perform the troubleshooting steps below..

a) Please remove the batteries from the sensor and remove the wind assembly as shown above.
b) Unplug the connectors, as shown above, for 1-2 minutes.
c) Reconnect the connectors.
d) Reinstall the wind assembly.
e) Reinsert the batteries into the sensor, battery pack, or plug in the power adapter. Confirm the red
light near the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor's battery compartment flashes once every 10
seconds. If the light flashes rapidly for 5 seconds once powered on, the wind assembly connectors
may not have a secure fit.

If the wind speed readings are inaccurate:

• What is wind reading being compared to? Pro weather stations are typically mounted at 33-feet or
higher. Make sure to compare data using a sensor positioned at the same mounting height.
• Check the location of the sensor. Ensure it’s mounted a minimum of 5-feet in the air with no
obstructions around it (within several feet). The National Weather Service recommends mounting the
sensor 33 feet above the ground with no obstructions within 100 feet for the most accurate wind speeds.
We understand not all of our customers can mount this high. You will receive an accurate reading for the
location your sensor is mounted including all surroundings. If you are comparing to a local news station,
they are following the National Weather Service guidelines.
• Ensure wind cups are spinning freely. If they hesitate or stop, try lubricating with graphite powder or
spray lubricant.

5
• Confirm the connectors are secure. Perform the troubleshooting steps

below.

a) Please remove the batteries from the sensor and remove the wind assembly as shown above.
b) Unplug the connectors, as shown above, for 1-2 minutes.
c) Reconnect the connectors.
d) Reinstall the wind assembly.
e) Reinsert the batteries into the sensor, battery pack, or plug in the power adapter. Confirm the red
light near the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor's battery compartment flashes once every 10
seconds. If the light flashes rapidly for 5 seconds once powered on, the wind assembly connectors
may not have a secure fit.

4. AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) No Rainfall

If your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) High Definition Display or My AcuRite® account is not reporting rainfall from your
AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Weather Station, open the sensor to inspect the tipping cups that measure rainfall within
the sensor for debris. These steps can also be used as routine maintenance to clean the interior of the sensor.

If no rainfall readings are being recorded:

• Confirm the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) display is showing 4 bars of signal strength (Wireless Signal Strength
Indicator) during the rain event and/or that the My AcuRite Dashboard shows the sensor is online and
updating during the rain event (How do I Check the Last Time a Sensor Updated).
• Be sure the stabilizer foam for rain collector (put in place for shipping purposes) placed inside of the
AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor has been removed. To open the rain gauge, use the black tab near the
anemometer and pull up.
• Make sure the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor's internal tipping lever is able to move freely by visually
inspecting the internal tipping cups. The black rain bucket detaches from the bottom half of the sensor
using the clip indicated below to expose the interior where the tipping cups that measure rainfall are
located. Inspect this area for any debris or obstructions that may be preventing the tipping cups from
moving and measuring rainfall.

If you have not previously cleaned out the sensor, please complete the following procedure:

6
Items Needed:

AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor, damp cloth, car wax, toothbrush (optional), mothball (optional)

• First, open your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor by detaching the rain bucket (black portion) from the
bottom half of the sensor.
• After your sensor has been opened, remove any insects, cobwebs, or debris. An old toothbrush can help
to clean out the hard-to-reach places.
• Use a damp cloth to clean off the rain gauge tipping buckets. Note: The damp cloth should only be used
to clean the tipping buckets. Do not use to clean any other internal components.
• Place a small amount of car wax on a soft cloth and wipe down the tipping bucks to ensure that rain flows
through smoothly. To test the rain gauge, slowly rock the tipping lever back and forth with your finger
about 5 times. Wait 1 minute and the display should read approximately .05”. The MyAcuRite Dashboard
will update every 5 minutes and may take a full 10 minutes to reflect the rain data.
• To further defend against insects crawling into your sensor, you may place a mothball in the nook, near
the tipping cups. Adhere the mothball to the sensor with a piece of tape. Note: Insect repellent may be
used for additional protection but should not be sprayed on the internal components or into the sensor.
• Reassemble the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor by reattaching the rain bucket to the bottom half of the
sensor.

Once you have cleaned out the sensor, please ensure the following:

• If you removed the tipping assembly, ensure that it has been re-installed correctly. On one side of the
assembly, there is a silver plug. The silver plug is a magnet and must be above the compartment for it to
register rain. Inside the compartment is the reed switch, when the magnet passes back and forth, it
opens/closes the reed switch and that is how the rain is measured.
• The red light near the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensors battery compartment flashes every 10 seconds.

5. AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Rain Calibration

The following calibration procedure can be used if the rainfall measurements produced by the AcuRite AcuRite
Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor are inaccurate or incorrect. This procedure does not need to be performed upon receiving
the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor, it is calibrated during the manufacturing process.

To calibrate the rain gauge on the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor:

• First, make sure the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor is perfectly level using the built-in bubble level.
• Place the display unit close by so you can monitor it during the calibration process.
• Make a pinhole in the bottom of a plastic cup. Hold the cup over the rain gauge and fill it with exactly 1
cup (8 oz.) of water, allowing the water to slowly drip into the rain gauge. You should hear the internal
buckets tip and see the water drain through the rain gauge.
• A few seconds after each bucket tip, the display console will display rainfall as approximately 0.01" or
more increments.
• The cup of water should take more than 20 minutes to empty; a quicker period will result in an inaccurate
calibration. (We’re trying to simulate a normal steady rainfall.) When the cup is completely empty of water,
the display console should register 0.61"

If the rain gauge doesn't register close to 0.61" after the cup is empty of water, then you should make an equal
adjustment to the two calibration screws beneath the tipping lever. Be sure to adjust both screws the same
amount. Turning screws clockwise will decrease the rainfall amount. Turning screw counter-clockwise will increase
the rainfall amount.

Adjustment:
To adjust the rainfall reading by 2.5% turn both screws 1/4 of a turn.
To adjust the rainfall reading by 5% turn both screws 1/2 of a turn.

7
To adjust the rainfall reading by 7.5% turn both screws 3/4 of a turn.
To adjust the rainfall reading by 10% turn both screws 1 full turn.

• There should be nearly an equal number of water drops between bucket tips. If not, then adjust the
calibration screws beneath the tipping lever until an equal number of water drops are tipping the buckets.
Then, restart the calibration procedure.
• If you don't hear the buckets tipping and see water dripping alternately out of each drain, there may be
an issue with the rain gauge or its adjustment.

6. AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Inaccurate Lightning

If the Lightning Detector for AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Weather Station model 06075M was purchased as an
accessory and you experience excessive or an incorrect count of lightning strikes on your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1)
High Definition display or My AcuRite® account, please review the suggestions below. These steps can also be
used if your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Weather Station is experiencing false lightning strikes, interference, or the
"Cannot Detect Lightning" error is displayed.

Confirm there are no other sources that can mimic lightning strikes.

This sensor features advanced technology to distinguish between lightning strikes and interference, however, in
rare cases, the sensor may "false detect" lightning activity due to interference. In these situations, verify there is
no lightning in the area and identify and relocate the source of interference or relocate the sensor.

Some sources of interference can include:

• Electric motors (windshield wiper motor or fan motors in cars, hard drive and optical drive motors on your
PC and AV equipment, well pumps, sump pumps, garage door openers, etc.)
• CRT monitors (PC monitors, TV's)
• Fluorescent light fixtures (turned off or on)
• Microwave ovens (while in use)
• PC's and mobile phones

To learn more about how the lightning detector works, review the following article:

How Does the Lightning Detector Work?

Troubleshooting steps:

• Remove batteries from the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor or unplug battery pack or power adapter.
• Unplug the lightning detector from the sensor for at least 10 seconds.
• Plug the lightning detector into the sensor. Align the sensor notch with the module slot.
• Confirm the lightning detector's clips click into place.
• Install batteries into the sensor or plug the power source into the sensor.

If you are pairing to an AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) display unit, review sensor data on the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1)
display to confirm the lightning detector is recognized and set to the same designation as your sensor. To view
sensor data, enter the menu and select "Sensor" then select "Sensor Information".

If you are pairing to the AcuRite Access® Model 09155M, confirm the lightning data is showing on the dashboard.

UV or light intensity readings from your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Weather Station, please review the suggestions
below. These steps can also be used if your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Weather Station is not reporting any UV or
light intensity readings.

Check the sensor for debris. Use a damp cloth to wipe away any buildup on the UV and light sensor. Below is a
photo of the location for the UV and light sensor.
8
Confirm the sensor is not located in a fully shaded area. The UV and light intensity readings may be lower on a
cloudy day or if an obstruction is blocking the sunlight from directly shining on the sensor.

Confirm the red light near the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor's battery compartment flashes every 10 seconds and
the AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) display unit maintains 4 bars of signal strength. (Wireless Signal Strength Indicator)

The UV and Light Intensity Ranges are as follows:

8. AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) Draining Batteries

If your AcuRite Atlas® (7-in-1) sensor is losing connection to the display unit and/or AcuRite Access®, the low
battery icon is often present on the display, or the sensor is going through batteries too quickly, please review the
troubleshooting suggestions below. We expect recommended batteries to last between 12-24 months. If your
batteries are not lasting at least one year, we would recommend the following troubleshooting steps.

You would want to ensure the following first:

• Verify that the old batteries have lost all/most of their power by using a voltmeter or testing in other
devices. You can also verify if the Atlas sensor is receiving power by checking to see if the red light in the
battery compartment of the Atlas sensor is flashing every 10 seconds.
• Verify that you are about to use a fresh set of batteries. The battery expiration date should be at least 6
years out. Batteries can lose 3% of their power or more every year in storage.
• Use standard alkaline batteries from a high-quality brand (or lithium batteries in the sensor when the
temperature is below -4ºF/-20ºC). We do not recommend using heavy-duty or rechargeable batteries.
• When fresh batteries are installed, make sure the light in the battery compartment of the Atlas sensor
flashes every 10 seconds. If you notice 5 quick flashes when fresh batteries are installed, there may be a
loose connection within your Atlas sensor.

9
