Variable density systems with drop pressure.

Processes and Systems Engineering Program.

The reversible gas phase reaction: A +B⇔3 C is carried out in a isothermal packed bed reactor
(PBR) with a kinetic law:
C 3C
[
−r A=k C A C B−
KC ]
The parameters of the kinetic model are:
3
dm
k=1000
mol∗min∗kg
mol
K C =0,05 3
dm

The reactant flow is composed by A and B , FA0 = 15 mol/min, FB0 = 30 mol/min and CA0= 0,01
mol/dm3

The parameter of the packed bed is:

α =0,01 kg−1

The total amount of catalyst in the reactor is (Wf) equal to 85 kg.

Taking into account the Ergun equation for the behavior of pressure in a packed bed:

a) Develop the molar balance for the system.

b) Develop the Equations for material balance and Drop pressure of the system.
c) Solve the ODE system (attach code) to get the follow profiles: X vs. W ; Ci vs. W ; P/P0 vs. W ; Ci
vs. X
d) Which is the final conversión (X) ? Final value for P/P0 relation ?
e) If the P/P0 relation remains equal to 1, calculate the theoretical maximun conversion (Xeq).
