The paths of wine in Uruguay

If you are a wine fan, you will love going on this tour of the Uruguayan wineries.
The southern region of our continent is famous for the excellent quality of its wines. When we talk
about Chilean or Argentine wines, we enter an almost infinite world of varieties, flavors, and harvests
that fascinate us. And the Uruguayan wines are included!

Nowadays, there are 6000 hectares of active vineyards and more than 160 wineries almost
everywhere in the country. This feature makes Uruguay one of the wine lovers' favorite destinations.
We have prepared an exquisite tour for you to visit some of the most important vineyards and
wineries grouped in Los Caminos del Vino and learn all about their history, quality, and production
processes.

Wine tourism

Wine tourism aims at getting to know the wine production areas and the world of wine from its core: wineries, vineyards,
production, and history. These tours go far beyond considering wine as just a final product, complementing gastronomic and
cultural tourism.

In Uruguay, wine tourism also includes learning the details related to the cultures associated with the different ethnic
groups that emigrated to the country and still keep their European roots: Spanish, Italian, Basque, and Catalan. At the
wineries, you will know the selected varieties and the elaboration methods created by the ancestors, which remain making
wine tourism a unique experience.

Punta del Este flavors

Suppose you are planning to visit Punta del Este in the Maldonado department. In that case, there are two wineries that you
will love.

Alto de la Ballena is a small winery

dedicated to wine tourism. It started its
production in 2001. It is in the Sierra de la
Ballena, 15 kilometers from the coast and
its area covers approximately 8 hectares.
In Alto de la Ballena, you can taste the
Merlot, Tannat, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and
Viognier varieties, after a tour guided by
its owners. The perfect closure for this
visit is the view of a beautiful sunset over
the horizon from the hills.

Eleven kilometers away, in the

same Maldonado department,
you can visit Vi ñ a Ed é n. This
winery's soil has mineral
materials that create the ideal
conditions for producing
unique wines.

Uruguay, a destination to be discovered
Beaches, walks, and natural environments are some of the beautiful places this country invites us
to visit.

The Eastern Republic of Uruguay, better known simply as Uruguay, is a country that pleasantly
surprises you in every place you visit. You will find attractions from sites full of history, to
beaches and resorts where the parties never stop.

In this tour, we will show you the most amazing spots in each place you visit. Let's go ?

Montevideo

The Uruguayan capital is full of exciting surprises. Ciudad

Vieja is a rich combination of the old and the modern so
visiting it is mandatory. You will find the charming old part
of the city that recounts its past and admire the impressive
colonial constructions that belong to the beginnings of the
country's independence. It also has a variety of museums,
exhibition halls, cafés, restaurants, design stores,
bookstores, antique shops, and extensive streets for
shopping.

La Rambla is extended for almost 30 km and is an

important Montevideo symbol. This road winds along the
Río de la Plata and is well-known for being one of the
main places where friends can meet. Its long route goes
from the historical settings of the Ciudad Vieja to the
elegant homes in the exclusive Carrasco neighborhood.

After La Rambla, we arrive at one of the most beautiful

squares in the city: Plaza Independencia. It is on the limit
between the Ciudad Vieja and the downtown area,
surrounded by traditional heritage buildings and several
historical monuments.

Punta del Este

It is considered the most exclusive beach area in South

America. Its luxurious residences, elegant hotels and
restaurants, yachts in the port, and extensive beaches with
intense blue waters will amaze you. It is 5 kilometers from
the Maldonado state, the capital city of the same name, and
130 kilometers from Montevideo. However, this place offers
much more than beautiful beaches and luxury to tourists.
Punta del Este has excellent attractions for visitors, and
some of them are considered icons of the area. One of them
is Casapueblo, an extraordinary construction maze-shaped
created by the Uruguayan artist Carlos Páez Vilaró.
Curiously, he did not design a plan beforehand to build this
"habitable sculpture" where he lived and worked, expanding
and transforming it over 36 years. Its dazzling white color
reminds us of the Santorini buildings in Greece. However, the
artist preferred to recall the nests built by a typical
Uruguayan bird named hornero.

It is currently a hotel, a museum (Museo Taller de Casapueblo), an art gallery, and a café. Its 13 floors and terraces make
Casapueblo one of the best places in the area to watch the stunning sunset in Punta del Este.

If you want to take a bike ride or walk, Rambla Ar ti g as is

an excellent place to do it. It is in the western part of the
peninsula, and you can enjoy a fantastic view of the
Puerto de Mar del Plata, the Yacht Club, the Muelle de
Mailhos, and Isla Gorriti. It is extended for approximately
5 km and goes along part of the Atlantic Ocean and the
Río de la Plata.

One of the most famous symbols of Punta del Este is La

Mano (The Hand), created by the Chilean artist Mario
Irarrázabal. These enormous incomplete 5 fingers that
emerge from the sand were built on the beach in 1982 and
became one of the most important landmarks. A visit to
this exclusive resort cannot end without a photo next to
this work piece, located at bus stop 1 in Playa B rava.
Cabo Polonio

This rural town, which many people consider a paradise, is

the representation of tranquility. There is no electricity in
most of its houses, which only receive the light given by the
local lighthouse. It is located 263 kilometers from
Montevideo.

This isolated village is not connected to the main roads, so

to get there you must leave the car at the entrance of the
Parque Nacional Cabo Polonio. Then, you can enter on foot,
on horseback, or by truck through the dunes. You must
request this last service in advance.

Our tour begins at El Faro, a construction built in 1881

considered one of Cabo Polonio's most symbolic places. It is
26 meters high and can be seen at 17.8 nautical miles.
Visitors usually climb up its narrow spiral stairs to enjoy the
fantastic views over the town, the cape, the beaches, and
the sea. You can also admire sea lions and seals from El Faro
because they live mainly on the islets off Cabo Polonio.
These amazing marine animals can be observed without
binoculars in their natural habitat, swimming or resting in
areas such as the lighthouse.

On the other hand, if you want to admire the sunset or go

surfing, one of the best places in Cabo Polonio is Playa Sur.
It is extended for more than 20 kilometers, going from Cabo
to La Pedrera and it is a famous beach in sporting circles
because of its turbulent waters and big waves.

Colonia del Sacramento

It is 117 kilometers from Montevideo and off the coast of Buenos Aires (Argentina), and it is the capital of the Colonia
state.

You can get there by sea or by land. The departure is from Buenos Aires if you go by sea, but you may travel from
Montevideo by car or bus through Route 1.

Originally, Colonia was Portuguese, and later it belonged to Spain. Its past makes Colonia del Sacramento a place whose
historic center seems to have stopped in time, and UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site in 1995.

On this tour, one of its main points of interest is the Calle de los Suspiros, which is considered the perfect place to take
memorable pictures. This street begins in the Plaza Mayor and continues going down to reach Río de la Plata waters. It is a
narrow pedestrian way surrounded by houses built more than 200 years ago, whose facades maintain their original colors.

The origin of its name is obscure, and several legends explain

it. However, one of the most accepted theories is that the
desperate people condemned to death had to walk down this
street up to the Río de la Plata to wait for their end. It is said
that they sighed sadly before reaching their final destination
and drowning when the tide rose.

You can take a break and rest in the Plaza Mayor of Colonia
because a wide-open space with lots of vegetation is always
an invitation to relax. The Museo Municipal de Colonia del
Sacramento is in front of it for you to appreciate its
outstanding collection of prehistoric pieces.

El Faro is also another exciting place to visit: it is also in the

historic center, and you can enjoy extraordinary views from its
viewpoint. It is undoubtedly worth climbing up more than 300
narrow steps to admire them.

And you? Where will you start touring Uruguay? Let's go!
Premieres and Reconnections

Liniker, the Brazilian singer and actress, tells us a little about her experiences in Uruguay and her great 2021
releases

During the pandemic, the difficulties in shooting a film on the streets of São Paulo, Brazil, led singer and actress Liniker to travel to
Uruguay once again. In her first role as the series protagonist, Liniker was in Montevideo in 2020 to shoot Manhãs de Setembro (September
Mornings). It’s a drama about a black trans woman’s struggle to face the obstacles of daily life.

However, this wasn’t the first time that Liniker was in the country. She sang
with the Caramelows band until 2020, and they put on some shows in
Montevideo. “I really enjoy the city’s atmosphere. This last time, I went in the
middle of the pandemic to shoot the series, so I lived a lot in the Ciudad Vieja
(Old Town) part of the city, but playing the character itself, during the filming”,
she says. About her favorite activity in the Uruguayan capital, Liniker
highlights the Rambla - an avenue of more than 30 kilometers that borders
the Rio de la Plata. “Walking, riding a bike, and enjoying the horizon is a
delight.”

In Uruguay, Liniker also recommends Cabo Polonio, a small fishing village in

the south of the country, 260 kilometers from Montevideo. “I was there with
some friends, and it was an amazing experience, it’s a place to get
disconnected. There are no cars, no electric lights. I loved it, and I intend to go
back”.

Since her job requires much travel (in Brazil and worldwide), Liniker was
charmed with what the road and the skies can offer. “At each stop, we meet a
person, a different culture, especially with music, which also generates a
language, so there is a great exchange. But as we only spend a few days at
each stop, many of the places where I go give me this desire to return more
calmly, stay longer and experience the place for real”, she adds.

A year of changes

Manhãs de Setembro is Liniker's debut as an actress. It was

launched in June this year, and the five-episode series tells the
story of Cassandra (Liniker), a trans woman who works on a
motorcycle as a delivery girl in São Paulo. After years of much
suffering, she settles down and now lives a moment of stability.
She rented an apartment to live on her own and discovered love
in Ivaldo (Thomas Aquino). But everything gets complicated
when his ex-girlfriend Leide (Karine Telles) reappears with a boy
who claims to be Cassandra’s son.

2021 was also the year when the singer’s first solo album, Indigo
Butterfly Anil, was released in September. “The album is the
result of rescuing my origins and references since my childhood.
That’s why there is a mixture of sounds, elements, and
influences. The lyrics are also very personal, and they are the
result of the isolation period when I had time to reconnect with
myself and get back to writing”, she says.

The Manhãs de Setembro series is available on Amazon Prime Video. You can find the album Indigo Butterfly Anil on mainstreaming platforms.
