Hello I am Kijae and I will use this ignite talk to showcase a series of injuries over my life.

Everyone experiences injuries during their lives. However, I think I have experienced more than
the people around me. Here are the most memorable ones.

The first one happened in second grade. This is the most memorable one. My family went to
meet a family friend, we all ate dinner together and had a great time. After that the adults were
at home talking and the kids were outside playing. That’s when it happened.

We decided to play a game called zombie. The last person who stays alive wins. My friend and I
were running around together, and we found this beautiful tree. It was in the middle of a square
marble bench-thing where people can sit down.

It’s like this but marble. My friend said “yo let’s climb this thing, no one would get us” and I
agreed. I know dumb move. We did it anyway. We went up and felt a nice breeze. My friend left
the tree to go to the bathroom. This is when things went down.

After my friend left, I got bored and thought it was a good idea to try swinging around on the tree
branches like a monkey, but it was a bad idea. I misplaced my hand and I fell.

And remember I talked about the marble thing around the tree. My head went straight for it. I
have a bump on my forehead (shows crowd). It became smaller over the years but it’s still here.
I was on the ground agonizing.

But this is not the injury I am talking about. I’m sure my head hit the bench, but I felt more pain
in my left arm. After the whole incident, I went to the doctor to find out that the bone around my
left wrist was cracked.

The second one was a little older than the first one. Around 5th grade, I was walking in my
neighborhood with 2 friends. We were just chilling, talking about the political and economic state
of the world. Until I found an empty plastic bottle.

It was a beautiful one. Very empty and kickable. I’m sure some of you tried kicking something
on the ground, like a small pebble or a plastic bottle. I just felt it, I had to kick that bottle or it was
going to keep me awake that night.

I stopped and stepped back a bit. My friends were just watching. I ran and kicked it. Nothing
could’ve gone wrong with kicking an empty plastic bottle. But something bad happened. I just
had to kick the bottle.

But my foot went straight for the ground. Absolutely missed the very still bottle. And what’s
worse? I was not wearing sneakers or anything protective. I had crocs on, literally no protection
at all.

My thumb toe was bleeding, and I had to drag my right leg back home. My mom was initially
worried, but it went away after learning what I did. Then the worst part of this injury came. THE
SHOWER.

I was scared, absolutely terrified. It was not a normal shower, it was the water molecules
invading my toe. And I’m sure all of you guys know what water does to a cut, now imagine that
times a 100. Literal hell on Earth.

And guess what, my thumb toe bone broke. Had a cast on for at least a month. My friends made
fun of me when I walked up the stairs. But it was funny in my opinion as well.

The 3rd and last one was when I was in 8th grade. Happens every 3 years. I was on the
basketball team for my school. Only a month and a half before the city tournament. And I got
injured.
We were in practice, and had a great practice. Killed it in the scrimmage. Coach said, “Get
some water and sit down for a talk before we go”. Usually during these water breaks our team
shoots around.

But this time everyone was under one basket. People with the ball were shooting, people
without were rebounding. I don’t know but for some reason I went for a layup. Half of the team
under the basket and I had to do it.

I ran and jumped into the crowd and shot the ball. As I was coming down, the injury occured. My
right foot. Was supposed to come flat on the ground, however, it decided to go toe first. Missed
the shot by the way.

My whole right foot folded towards the inner part of my calf. I didn’t see it but I felt it. My whole
body weight bounced off of my right ankle and I was on the ground agonizing. Again. It took me
a while to heal from this one.

My mom didn’t let me play in the games, but I felt ready and I played. I had no practice for the
past month and a half. I scored 2 points during the whole tournament. But at least our team got
2nd place.
