High-Tech Help for People with Disabilities
Assistive technology helps the disabled do things that would otherwise be very difficult, if not impossible.
Every day, new high-tech devices aimed at facilitating mobility or communication come to the market. These
have the potential to be of great help to people with mobility problems, blindness, hearing difficulties, speech
impairments, cerebral palsy, stroke damage, autism, brain damage, and more.

In recent years, information technology has become much more accessible to people with special needs. From
specially-designed keyboards used by people with limited hand function to software that uses a computer-
generated voice to read the text on a computer screen, assistive technology has brought information
technology into the lives of people with conditions that used to prevent them from enjoying such access. For
example, eye-
controlled devices, such as computers, can enable people with various disabilities to lead more independent
lives, and even to work.

One of the many non-profit organizations whose goal is to empower people with disabilities is California-based
Project:Possibility. This group’s main aim is to develop software that will “unlock new areas of life for people
with disabilities”. The software created by the individuals at Project:Possibility is open source, which means
that it is available to anyone who wants it, free of charge. The organization doesn’t prevent anyone from
taking part in developing its projects either, and the result is that a diverse set of participants can be found at
Project:Possibility, including people with disabilities, educational specialists, artists and professional engineers
of all disciplines.

Some of their most interesting projects include the Barcode Reader, which informs the blind about products, in
stores in an audio format, and the Power Reader, which is a text reader and a learning tool for people with
dyslexia, a condition which causes difficulty in reading and spelling.
