to use this time wisely. It also

Content Standard(s) Instructional Decisions / Reasoning

This section is part of the current curriculum in

The essay, which is being reviewed
during this lesson, is an opportunity for
students to answer the question: How
might the people of a nation look at
freedom differently? Using the various
people and events we have talked about,
they will write about their understanding
of how people during this time period
viewed freedom differently. “Tracing and

Assessment - Uses assessment flexibly to expand and deepen understanding of learner performance
and determines best supports for continued learner growth.

Assessment Instructional Decisions / Reasoning

● Quizalize - Pre-Assessment/Study tool ● Quizalize is a technology tool I
for students discovered that delivers questions
● One on one check ins for progress being to students one at a time in a
made on the summative essays game-like manner, similar to
Kahoot. Every time a student
does the quiz on Quizalize, their
results are sent directly to my
email. This is both helpful for
students to study the content that
will be on the summative quiz,
but also helps me gauge which
students need help/what content
they need help with.
● One on one checks in will help
every student get individual
feedback from me as the
instructor to see if both their
examples and ideas are
convincing enough, and that it is
formatted correctly.

Instructional Materials and Resources - Stays current in content knowledge and expands expertise
in reviewing instructional materials from the perspectives of both the discipline and individual
learner needs.

● Workshop Work on essay - 25 min something I started so students would
explore different avenues of gaining
information around them. One student
will share a current event at the start of
each class on the BENQ projector. The
current event could be a news article,
video, tik tok, podcast etc. that relates to
a current event going on in the world.
This also allows time for students to talk
in front of their peers and share their
interests. This class we talked a lot about
recent events with Russia and Ukraine,
including how propaganda is a tool of
war as well.
● Google slide/visual schedule for end of
the quarter gives students a guide to look
at while I explain plan for the last week
of the quarter.
● Workshop time for Quizalize the class
before the final summative multiple
choice quiz will ensure each student is
practicing at least a few times before
April 1st. Having time to complete this
in class also allows students to compare
scores, or study together.
● Workshop time for the essay is very
important as well. This is due by the end
of class April 1st. As students transition
from working on Quizalize to their essay
on google classroom, I can give every
student one on one feedback on their
progress. At this point, students have
bullet points, introductions and main
paragraphs started.

● Assigned break during class and hard copy allow for students to use a
preferred medium of note taking. All
content uploaded to google classroom as
well allows for students to refer back to
readings, slide shows, or any other
material at any time.
● An assigned break during class allows
for students to have a “treat” to work
towards, and have better focus during
instructional periods of time. It can reset
a class for a new activity and helps
students who have a hard time focusing
for long periods of time.

Field Courses Only – Post lesson

Reflection
This lesson was extremely helpful in terms of gauging where students are at with completing
quarter 3. Motivating students by going over the short calendar schedule, setting timers during
the workshop time and providing a break all amounted to a successful use of time. Students
were engaging with Quizalize, and then their essays towards the end of class. If I were to do this
lesson again, which I am providing workshop time after students complete the summative
multiple choice quiz next class, I would make the time for working on essays a bit longer.

Teaching Standards and Rationale

COMMON CORE STANDARDS:
Standard 1:Learner Development: The teacher understands how students learn and
develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within
and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and
implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
1(a) Regularly assesses individual and group performance in order to design and modify
instruction to meet learners’ needs in each area of development (cognitive, linguistic,
social, emotional, and physical) and scaffolds the next level of development.
Rationale: This lesson shows an importance towards learner development because I
implemented time into the students curriculum to work with technology, Quizalize, that
gives me feedback on success of content. As scores are sent immediately to me, I can
make choices on how time needs to be spent for students during this workshop. For
example, many of the students were receiving 100% on their Quizalize pre-assessment. I
can inform those students to begin working on their essays if that felt like a better use of
time, and for many of them, that was. Being able to use tools such as Quizalize to help
gauge how students are learning is a sign of a teacher who values learner development
and makes changes according to those developments.
Standard 3: Learning Environments The teacher works with learners to create
environments that support individual and collaborative learning, encouraging positive
social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self motivation.
3 (b) Develops learning experiences that engage learners in collaborative and self-directed
learning and that extend learner interaction with ideas and people locally and globally.
Rationale: This lesson reflects a positive learning environment for the students by the
participation of current events with Ms. Jerome. As each student presents to the class an
event they found by self-directed research, they are creating a space where both their
peers and I can gain insight on their interests and local and global issues as well. Not only
are students learning from their peers new content from the news, social media and more,
they are also learning how to have respect for the differences in political stances each
other might have. Students also want to do well in front of their peers, so they place
importance on this assignment even though it is quick.
