5 Senses with Poetry

In my lesson teaching 5 senses with poetry, I had many good things as well as

things I must reflect upon. After my lesson it was evident that I need to improve on how

to grab the attention of my students. I knew from my education of some strategies I could

use, however, the strategies I did try were not as successful as I had hoped for. I will say

that the short time I was given added stress to my plate about getting the students the

knowledge that they need. For being my very first lesson and my first time teaching a

lesson, I am extremely proud of how I did and cannot wait to improve for the next time.

The biggest challenge I faced was getting the attention of my students and

keeping their focus on the lesson. I need to find a better attention grabber because the

current ones I have been using were not as effective in keeping them on track. If I could

do it all over again, I would find a way to make the instructional part and the closure

more engaging because when I was talking to them, I could sense they were feeling antsy

and could not focus as much. Another thing I wish I could have done was teach the lesson

in the morning because I was told the students are more engaged in the morning and are

more willing to participate.

I believe the independent and guided practice was very successful and engaging

because it allowed students to express their learning through fun pictures that got their

imagination going. I could really tell that the students understood what they were being
taught because as I walked around, I was able to ask each student a question about 5

senses and I was given a detailed response. It was also very beneficial to set up my

guided practice with creative drawing because I could visually see which students were

straying off the topic and which of them needed more assistance.

Overall, my first lesson was a success. I am immensely proud of how hard I

worked and how much knowledge I gained from this experience that I know will translate

well in my future lessons. I learned and will improve what strayed off my goal in the

lesson to ensure that my future lessons run in a more fluent manner. I am very thankful

for having such an amazing mentor teacher in my kinder classroom who helped me and

talked me through my concerns. I know that in the future I will think back to this lesson

and use my experience to guide me.
