Method Statement:
1. Degrease and clean to SSPC-SP 1 solvent cleaning and remove all the foreign matter before application;
**SSPC-SP 1 = Complete removal of oil, grease, wax and other contaminants by cleaning with solvents, vapors, emulsions, alkalies
or stream.
2. Checking on the prepared surface to ensure where is free from contamination pror to application;
3. On the areas where surface cleaning is accept, apply 1st coat of epoxy resin primer ( SigmaCover 522 ) @ 40 micron
dry film thickness ( DFT ) by airless spray, brushing or rolling and allow to dry.
4. After 8 hours (min.) drying at 20 °C, check and ensure the dry film thickness ( DFT ) of epoxy resin primer
( SigmaCover 522) achieved to the specified thickness;
5. On the accept areas, apply 1st coat of acrylic polyurethane finish coat ( SigmaDur 520 ) @ 50 micron dry film
thickness ( DFT ) by airless spray, brushing or rolling and allow to dry.
6. After 6 hours (min.) drying at 20 °C, check and ensure the dry film thickness ( DFT ) of acrylic polyurethane finish
( SigmaDur 520 ) achieved to the specified thickness;
7. On the accept areas, apply 2nd coat of acrylic polyurethane finish coat ( SigmaDur 520 ) @ 50 micron dry film
thickness ( DFT ) by airless spray, brushing or rolling and allow to dry.
8. After 6 hours (min.) drying at 20 °C, check and ensure the dry film thickness ( DFT ) of acrylic polyurethane finish
( SigmaDur 520 ) achieved to the specified thickness;
9. Touching up the coating if necessary.
Notes:
1. Slightly sanding the surface with sand paper and clean up the surface before application;
2. Touch up the areas with subsequent coating as per painting system approved;
3. All technical information, i.e. mixing ratio and overcoating interval should refer to our product data sheet.

0.0 Preparation
Due to the structural steel material is hot-dip galvanized. Prior to precede the
subsequent procedures of paint system on Galvanized steel surface on site,
the contractor should ensure the steel surface should be thoroughly clean.
Any zinc residue or paint residue left on the steel surface should be removed.
1.0 Paint System for Steel Work
1.1 Each coat in the paintwork system shall be sufficiently dry or cured
before the next coat is applied. The time between the application of
successive coats shall be accordance with paint manufacturer’s
recommendations.

2.0 Working conditions for painting
Paint shall not be applied to steelwork under the following conditions:
2.1 When ambient temperature falls below 4oC or the relative humidity
rises above 85%
2.2 When the surface temperature of the metal to be painted is less than
3oC above the dew point of the ambient air, and
2.3 When the amount of dust in the air or on the surface to be painted is
excessive.
2.4 The surrounding area and facilities should be protected (e.g. picture 1)

3.1 The dry film thickness of the paint coats to the steelwork shall be
measured using a magnetic dry film thickness gauge and/or by

electronic dry film thickness gauges like elcometer 345 or equivalent.
The total dry film thickness shall be measured at spacing of
approximately 3 meter. If the measured dry film thickness is less than
75% of the specified nominal dry film thickness or if more than 10% of
the measured dry film thickness are less than 95% of the specified
nominal dry film thickness, repair work shall be carried out in
accordance with approved procedure.
3.2 Dry film thickness reading on structural members shall be taken at

three points for each linear meter.
3.3 Each coat of paint shall be free from embedded foreign matter,
mechanical damage and surface defects, including bitterness,
blistering, brush marks, bubbling, cissing, cracking, cratering, dry spray,
floating, pinholing, rivelling, runs, sagging, spotting and spray mottle.
The finished paintwork system shall have an even and uniform
appearance.

Control of consumption of paint.
Quantity of paints to be consumed shall be apportioned in accordance

with paint area and in principle total quantity of the paints shall be
deemed to be consumed. Quantity of the consumed paint shall be
checked per block or per day for which consumption of paints has been
calculated and taking into account the loss factors.
Control during paint application.
Paint application shall be carried out in accordance with several

conditions and allowable range, to keep nominal film thickness and
necessary data for paint application shall be recorded on control sheet.

5.1 Scope of work
Painting of steel structure fire protection painting system should be carry
out in accordance with specification and manufacturer recommendation of
Nullifire fire protection.

5.2 Anticorrosive Primer
5.2.1 Sigmacover 522 Primer Micaceous Iron Oxide.
5.2.2 Dry film thickness approx 80 micron average.
5.2.3 The application shall be carried out by airless spray, brush and
/or roller.
5.3 Prior to Application of SC801-120

5.3.1 Before application of SC801-120, the dry film thickness of
anticorrosive primer shall be measured and be added to the
dry film thickness of SC801-120.
5.3.2 The anticorrosive primer shall be checked and must be dry

and free of foreign substances.
5.3.3 Application of SC801-120
5.3.4 Method of Application

SC801-120 shall be applied by means of airless spray, brush
and/or roller
5.3.5 Application
SC801-120 shall be applied in several coats up to the required
dry film thickness.
5.3.6 Prior to Application of Simgadur 520 Topcoat

 Before application of Sigmadur 520 Topcoat, the
surface must be dry and free of foreign substances.
 Before applying subsequense coat previous coat

should be sufficiently cured.
5.3.7 Application of Sigmadur 520 Topcoat

Sigmadur 520 Topcoat shall be applied by means of airless
spray, bursh and/or roller.
5.3.8 General
During application and curing of SC801-120 & Sigmadur 520
Top Coat, care must taken against weathering / rain etc.

6.0 Safety
The space / area where paint application takes place should be of good
ventilation, away from any naked fire and any machines that would create
high heat and sparks.
Workers who apply paint shall be equipped with safety helmets, goggles,
gloves, masks, safety belts and breathing apparatus if necessary.
7.0 Repair Method

The severity of the damages on the Fire Resistance Coating can be classified into the
follow categories :
7.1 Severe damages 一 the fire resistance coating is damaged up to the primer level,
i.e. the primer coating is visible
Actions:
i. At around 0.5 cm of the vicinity of damaged area, cut
away and remove all fire resistance coating until the
primer in that area is exposed
ii. Make sure that all dust, residues and other
contaminants are removed from the surface of the cut
area by vacuum cleaner dry compressed aid or clean
brush before further application
iii. Recoat the primer (522) to the required dry film
thickness on damaged area by brush
iv. Apply the fire resistance coating (SC801-120) to the
required dry film thickness according to the
recommendations from the manufacturer.
v. Apply the topcoat (Sigmadur 520) to the required dry
film thickness according to recommendations from the
manufacturer
7.2 Moderate damages - Part of the fire resistance coating is damaged and not up to
the primer level, i.e. the intumescent paint dry film thickness is partly affected
Actions:
i. Remove the paint film in the damaged portion with power

grinder or sand paper # 120 一 150 until the surface is flat
and smooth，no need to remove paint film up to primer level
ii. Make sure that all dust. residues and other contaminants
are removed from the surface of the cut area by clean
brush before further application
iii. Apply the fire resistance coating (SC801-120) to the

required dry film thickness according to recommendations
from the manufacturer
iv. Apply the topcoat (Sigmadur 520) to the required dry film
thickness according to recommendations from the
manufacturer
7.3 Minor damages – Parts of the top coat coating is damaged and not up to
intumescent paint level
i. Remove the paint film in the damaged portion with power grinder or
sand paper # 120-150 until the surface is flat and smooth
ii. Apply the Topcoat (Sigmadur 520) to the required dry film
thickness.
7.4 Touch Up of welding area
i. Degrease where necessary, remove weld spatter by

grinding, round off any sharp edges,
ii. Make sure that all dust. residues and other

contaminants are removed from the surface of
the welding area by clean brush before further
application
iii. Apply approved gal. paint on welding location

(for GMS surface)
iv. Repeat the step on item 7.1 – iii to v

Affirmation of Compatibility – Nullifire Systems
To whom it may concern,

CPG Europe develop, produce and market a range of intumescents under the Nullifire brand, for a
range of applications and environments to protect structural steel from the effects of fire.
Most of the time, but not always, a primer is recommended for use under these systems to offer
anticorrosion protection, and promote adhesion to the substrate.
Similarly, depending on the environment and lifetime expectations, a topcoat may be required to
protect the intumescent system from weather damage. Additionally, it may be required for aesthetic
purposes.
As CPG Europe do not manufacture or market primers and topcoats, it is often necessary for us to
evaluate the compatibility of coatings from other manufacturers with our systems. This is done through
technical review of supplied product datasheets only, and CPG Europe recommend to always conduct
small scale test applications prior to embarking on the full project.

Nullifire SC801-120
1. This approval relates to the use of Nullifire SC801-120 for the fire protection of steel I-
shaped beams and columns, circular and rectangular hollow column sections. The
precise scope is given in Tables 1 to 24 which show the total dry film thickness of Nullifire
SC801-120 (excluding primer and topcoat) required to provide fire resistance periods in
accordance with BS476: Part 21: 1987 of 15 minutes up to 120 minutes for differing
sections, section factors and design temperatures.
2. This certification is provided to the client for their own purposes and we cannot opine on
whether it will be accepted by Building Control authorities or any other third parties for
any purpose.
3. The products are approved on the basis of:
i) Initial type testing.
ii) A design appraisal against TS15.
iii) Certification of quality management system to ISO 9001: 2008.
iv) Inspection and surveillance of factory production control.
v) Audit testing.
4. The data referring to three-sided fire exposure of beams relate to beams supporting
concrete floor slabs. Separate consideration is required where this is not the case.
5. The data shown is applicable to steel sections blast cleaned to ISO 8501-1 SA 21/2 or
equivalent and primed with a suitable and compatible primer. Specifications of surface
preparations, primers and topcoats are available from the manufacturer whose
responsibility is to ensure that Nullifire SC801-120 is compatible for use in respect of both
ambient and fire conditions. The total dry film thickness of primer and topcoat together
should not exceed that tested.
6. Specific data given in the tables applies to horizontal, vertical, flexural and compression
members supporting loads up to the maximum design loads specified in BS449: Part 2.
7. The approval relates to on going production. Product and/or its immediate packaging is
name or name and mark, together with the CERTIFIRE certificate number and
application where appropriate.
8. The data shown in the tables is based on assessments which comply with the criteria
for acceptability now incorporated within the CERTIFIRE scheme.
