INSTRUCTIONS: Answer the following questions. Write your answer on the space provided for each number.
For I – II, briefly explain your answer if you think the change in condition has NO
EFFECT in the equilibrium of the reaction.

I. For questions 1 – 5, consider the endothermic decomposition of carbonic acid below.

H2CO3 (aq) ↔ CO2 (g) + H2O(l)

1) Where would the equilibrium shift if the amount of H2CO3 is increased?

Answer: will shift to the right
2) Where would the equilibrium shift if the amount of H2O is decreased?
Answer: NO EFFECT in the equilibrium of the reaction for it is a liquid molecule same as solid
3) Where would the equilibrium shift if partial pressure of carbon dioxide is decreased?
Answer: will shift to the right
4) Where would the equilibrium shift if N2 gas is introduced in the system?
Answer: NO EFFECT in the equilibrium of the reaction for it is arranged completely.
5) Where would the equilibrium shift if the temperature in the reaction is increased?
Answer: will shift to the right

II. For questions 6 – 10, consider the endothermic decomposition of ammonium chloride below.
NH4Cl(s) ↔ NH3 (g) + HCl (g)

6) Where would the equilibrium shift if the amount of HCl is increased?

Answer: will shift to the left
7) Where would the equilibrium shift if the amount of NH3 is decreased?
Answer: will shift to the left
8) Where would the equilibrium shift if the temperature of the reaction decreases?
Answer: will shift to the left
9) Where would the equilibrium shift if the partial pressure of NH3 is decreased?
Answer: will shift to the right
10) Where would the equilibrium shift if the concentration of NH4Cl is increased?
Answer: NO EFFECT in the equilibrium of the reaction for it is a solid molecule that is same as
the liquid that does not change anything.

III. Refer to the following chemical equilibrium and answer the question that follows in not more than
3 sentences. NH4Cl(s) ↔ NH3 (g) + HCl (g)

Based on Boyle’s law, what will be the effect to the partial pressure of HCl if volume is
decreased? Where would the equilibrium shift?

Based on Boyle’s law, the pressure and volume are inversely proportional to each other which

makes the partial pressure of HCI increase if the volume is decreased. So the equilibrium will

shift to right.
