Essay & Reflection of Brain-Based Strategy

Brain-based learning refers to teaching methods, lesson designs, and school programs that are
based on the latest scientific research about how the brain learns, including such factors as
cognitive development—how students learn differently as they age, grow, and mature socially,
emotionally and cognitively.

Teachers can establish a classroom and school environment that is fun and safe, and, therefore,
more brain-compatible for learning.

Some Brain-Based Strategies:

1. Passive Attention – teach learners to fish for themselves rather than feed them.
2. Creation of Meaning- construct the meaning of emotionally charged experiences by putting
them into words.
3. Flow and Fluency – the alignment & delivery of content leads to higher achievement.
4. whole to parts to whole – change the way learner processes information from parts
To whole and vice versa.
5. Illustrations – using illustrations enhances long term memory and is more effective.
6. Prior knowledge - After assessing students' prior knowledge and addressing misconceptions,
the instructor can use assessment results to inform future instruction, connecting what students
already know with new knowledge and understandings.
7. Student Generated Learning – let students generate samples to retain memory.

Reflection:

Brain Based Learning is based on the structure and function of the brain. As long as the brain
is not prohibited from fulfilling its normal processes, learning will occur. People often say that
everyone can learn. Yet the reality is that everyone does learn. Brain-based learning has been
called a combination of brain science and common sense. How the brain works has a significant
impact on what kinds of learning activities are most effective. Educators need to help students
have appropriate experiences and capitalize on those experiences. Knowing how the brain
works best allows educators to create an environment that gives the student a higher
probability of success in learning.
