The picture shows two people with lots of tattoos on different parts of their bodies and it
also shows how rich their culture was back then. Centuries before Ferdinand Magellan
arrived on our shores in 1521, Visayan culture was fully established, especially in the
coastal districts of Mindanao and the interior. When the Spanish Recollect missionaries
first reached the Cagayan area in 1622, they witnessed and recorded that tattooing was
common among the indigenous, just as it was among the Visayans. The Spaniards referred
to the Visayans as "Pintados," or "painted ones," and this name was also used to designate
any tattooed man in Mindanao.
