Activity # 2

The community I am going to discuss is the community of my city Santa Rosa that I have been a

part of for many years now. I have been there long enough to see that there are tangible and

intangible aspects of culture in that community. The tangible aspects of culture in Santa Rosa

would be the Plaza at Bayan, The Enchanted Kingdom, and Nuvali. These are all places that can

only be found in Santa Rosa and are even known by those who live outside Santa Rosa. There is

a common joke wherein if people found out you live in Santa Rosa they would always ask “Edi

lagi kang nasa EK?”. That just shows that those places are now really a part of culture in this

community. For the intangible aspects of culture in Santa Rosa, one that stands out to me the

most is how we use the prefix “na-“ and if not for my friend who grew up in Ilocos, I would

never have noticed it. She pointed out that we say use the prefix “na-“ when we say a verb that’s

currently happening. For an example, we say “nakain ako ng manok” instead of “kumakain ako

ng manok”. The former suggests that the person is being eaten by the chicken instead of the

person eating a chicken. Ever since she pointed this out, I have noticed that everyone that I know

here in Santa Rosa, or maybe in Laguna says it that way including myself. Those are the tangible

and intangible aspects of culture in the community that I belong with.
