TOPIC : THE HARMONY OF SCIENCE AND THE BIBLE

Introduction : Gods Word and Science. Our study will take us through various fields of
Science – and most current knowledge. God’s Word can meet the test of all on the latest
discoveries, even though it was written several thousand years ago.

I. ASTRONOMY.
a) The earth/moon system. It is not surprising that the ________ were the only ancient
people who were taught that the EARTH was round and not flat. (Prov.8:27; Isa.40:22,
“It is God who sits about the CIRCLE of the earth…” The book of Isaiah was written
approximately 2,700 years ago, as recently as 500 years ago, even educated men believed
the earth was flat.
Ancient philosophers and scientists had their own versions of how the heavens and
Earth rested on the head and shoulders of Atlas. Men like Aristotle and Plato thought the
Earth was a living being and volcanoes were the result of its vomiting.
It was not until the 15th century that men finally believed the earth to be ROUND.
In 1492, when Columbus sailed the ocean blue, to find the earth was not flat. God’s
Word had contained this truth all along.

b) An Unsupported Globe. (Job 26:7) Job wrote a clear statement in unscientific terms that
The earth is not mechanically supported. The earth does not rest on the shoulder of Atlas
Nor the earth hangs literally on _________ & is w/out support , was not discovered until
The 15th century & was not really accepted until the 17th century.

c) A Reflecting Luminary. Another marvel in the book of Job is the revelation that the
moon does not shine on its own. (Job.25:5),”Even the moon, shineth not..) This truth was
not discovered until 3,000 years later, when the ___________ was invented by Galileo on
1609, revealed the moon reflects the light of the sun.

d) The Stars, The Innumerable Stars.

Hipparches (Gk. Astronomer) counted less than 3,000 stars ;
Ptolemy (Gk. Astronomer) 1,058 stars ;
Kepler (German Astronomer; 1571-1630) 1,005 stars ;
Tycho Brahe (Danish Astronomer) 777 stars ;
In 1609, Galileo invented the telescope, realized the _____ were innumerable. God’s
Word tell of the multiplicity of the stars.. (Gen.22:17; Jer.33:22; Heb.11:12)
II. BIOLOGY = Is the science of ____ or living matter in all its forms and phenomena,
especially with reference to origin, growth, reproduction, structure and behavior.

A. Most basic laws of Biology : Life only comes from ______.”

 What the Bible tells us : that life came from pre-existing life – G O D !
Throughout the ages, man has believed that tiny microscopic forms of lifelike bacteria,
flies, etc, came to life from dead matter. It was Louis Pasteur, (French chemist, scientist)
who believed God’s Word and proved that even tiny microscopic creatures came from
pre-existing life. Genesis gave us this basic law long before BIO. 101 came along…
Gen. 1:11,21,25 – “LIFE BEGETS LIKE…” after their kind…
“Life only comes from life”. Each species has a different and specific number of self-
perpetuating Chromosomes and cannot intermated with another. CHROMOSOMES =
are instrumental in governing the body cells of a creature to split, divide and reproduce
themselves. Two kinds of animals within the same species can mate to reproduce a 3rd
kind. Ex. A horse and donkey = Mule; but when this happen, the offspring is always
sterile and cannot reproduce itself. Mule cannot be considered a new species. “KIND”
then does not mean species, but indicates those animals which can reproduce themselves.
This harmonizes with the record of Genesis. Gen.1:11,21,25 tells us every living
creatures that moves multiplies after its own KIND. For centuries, it was believed one
species of animal some- how interbred with another species to produce a new species.
Ex. A dog + cat =(would yield new species) cog/dat; half- dog or half-cat.

B. Second basic laws of Biology : LIKE always gives rise to _____ “.

Ancient Traditions believed that one species of animal somehow interbred with
another species to produce a new species. Ex. DOG + CAT = COG/DAT

C. Flesh – All flesh is not the same. ( I Cor.15:39 )

In the history of Science, man had always held the FLESH was-for the most part- the
same, and had Electron Microscope invented in the early 1930’s which can now
magnify more than 2 M times, scientist began to investigate the cell. It was found that
cells differ radically in structure, chemical composition, methods of eating, reproduction
and purpose. TODAY, a tiny piece of flesh found in the field can be analyzed accurately
enough to determine its species. Interestingly, modern science has made 4 divisions of
flesh ;
(1) Man (2) Beast (3) Fish (4) Fowl.
Just as Paul noted nearly 2,000 years ago in I Cor. 15:39.

D. Life is in the blood. (Lev. 17:14)

God pronounced : “The life of the flesh is in the blood.” Unfortunately, man did not take
God, seriously on this matter. Throughout history, “Bloodletting” is known to have been
practiced as means to rid the body of disease, for blood was considered a carrier of
disease rather than a source of life. This practice is recorded as early as the 4th century
B.C. and was even performed on the first Pres.of the U.S.A.-George Washington, who
died as a result. But about 100 years ago, scientist discovered the continuance of life is
 dependent upon the nourishment of the body – which is furnished by the BLOOD.
Moses wrote 3,500 years ago, Lev. 17:14,” The life of every creature is in the blood…”

E. One Race. (Acts.17:26),”From one man he created all the nations throughout ..earth…
Some believed there were 5 distinct races, and each race had different blood. In 1900,
Karl Landsteiner discovered all human blood has one common base : Plasma.
If only man had paid closer attention to God’s Word, the life endangering practice of
bloodletting and prejudicial idea of 5 separate races, would never have come into being.
The Bible provided man with correct information regarding these issues.

III. HEALTH AND SANITATION. (Lev. 21:34,35; 7:19)

The medical and sanitary laws of Moses were far in advance of their time. Compare the
customs and belief of the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians with those of the Hebrews.
Leviticus lists the animals, fish, birds and insects the Israelites were allowed to eat as well as
those which were off limits. As man’s knowledge has increased, God has been proven right
in the instructions He gave mankind regarding FOOD.
God commanded that of the animals which lived on earth, only those having split hooves
and who chewed the cud were to be eaten. About 100 years ago, it was discovered that
many diseases are caused by germs which spread from one person to another by contact.
It also now known that the creatures which God forbade are subject to parasitic infection.
They are safe to eat only if they have been fed cleanly, and if their meat has been cooked
thoroughly before eating. Even then, there is considerable doubt about their cleanliness
because many of the unclean animals, such as pig, are scavengers, and will eat their own
excrement.
The animals God pronounced clean have two or more stomachs and are able to destroy
parasitic impurities through their longer digestive time cycle. The digestive cycle of unclean
animals is often unable to kill the contaminants before the food eaten becomes flesh.
The animals which the Israelites were permitted to eat are now known to modern medical
science as the safest and the healthiest. The only insects God allowed for FOOD were –
bettles, grasshoppers and certain locusts, all of which are known to be clean feeders and safe
for human consumption. They are still eaten today. It is interesting to note that “CLEAN
ANIMALS” are predatory, do not eat blood and respond to a SHEPHERD.
IV. SANITATION. (Lev. 17:13; Deut. 23:12,13)
In 1844, medical doctor IGNAS PHILIP SEMMELWEISS, the asst.Director of the Vienna
Maternity Hospital, suggested the doctors that the high rate of death among patients and new
babies was due to the fact that the Doctors attending them were carrying infections from the
diseased and dead people whom they had previously touched. He ordered doctors to was
their hands with soap and water, and then rinse them in a strong chemical before examining
their patients. He tried to get doctors to wear clean clothes and battled for clean wards.
However, majority of the doctors disagreed with SEMMELWEISS, and deliberately
disobeyed his orders.
In the late 19th century, on the basis of the work of SEMMELWEISS, JOSEPH LISTER,
began soaking surgery instruments, the operating table, his hands and the patients with
carbonic acid. The result were astonishing! Today, we know LISTER AND SEMMEL-
WEISS were right.
The above laws which Moses recorded are comparable to modern health and sanitation
practices in most civilized countries. History is replete with tragic plagues and rampaging
diseases which resulted from unsanitary conditions. It was not until the last century that
significance of a clean and sanitary water supply in the prevention of disease was recognized
but Moses seem to understand something of modern bacteriology.
In Deut.23:12,13 – direction were given for the disposed of human dung by _______ . This
and all the sanitary regulations, were far ahead of the practices in even the advanced
countries of the world until the past 100 years. Widespread suffering from incredible
plagues can be experienced when the health and sanitation laws of Scriptures are violated.
V. GEOLOGY = is a science dealing with the history of the earth and its life,
particularly as recorded in the rocks.

A. Stratification and Fossilization. (Gen. 7:18-24; 8:1-5)

The details of Genesis agrees remarkably with the latest geological findings. In fact, the
account of anywhere in the world.

B. Lava and Magma. ( Job 28:5 )

The earth’s crust is only 3 to 25 miles in thickness. Composition of the earth : crust –
mantle – core. Under the crust are several 1,000 miles of molten matter – like a plastic
which glows red hot. God shared this knowledge with us in the oldest book of the Bible
– Job.

C. Mountains and Canyons in the Oceans. ( 2 Sam.22;16; Jonah 2:6)

Until a century ago, scientists believed the ocean floor was shaped like a _____ . Today,
we know that there are mountain ranges under the surface of the ocean over 10,000 miles
in length. The Marianas Trench off the coast of Japan is more than 36,000 feet deep-
enough to completely submerge Mount Everest, the worlds highest mountain above sea
level. Scripture contained secrets of the sea that have been hidden until this century.

D. Oceanography. ( Psalm 8:8),”The fowl of the air,..passeth through the path of the seas.”
 1) The path of the seas. Matthew Maury an officer in the U.S. Navy in the early
1800’s in charge of the charts and records used by Navy ships. While in bed sick, his
wife read Psalm 8:8, he wondered how that could be. (a) He studied ships records
and logs. Requested the ship Captain to record daily their location, wind speed,
direction. Over the next 20 years, was able to look over thousands of these forms. (b)
Requested sea captain to drop tightly corked bottles into the sea, carrying the date and
location where they were dropped. Asked them to pick up those bottles and record it
where they were found. From all the information, he collected, he was able to chart
the paths of the ocean currents. The “path of the seas” was scientifically confirmed by
Matthew Maury, the “father of Oceanography & Hydrography.” These paths are still
used today by all shipping companies. Today, we know these currents are caused by
strong steady winds blowing from east to west on each side of the planet.

2) Spring of the sea. ( Job 38:16 ), “Have you journeyed to the spring of the sea?”
It is only in recent years that ________ been discovered on the sea bottom. Many
such scientific mysteries as “the breadth of the earth.”(Job 38:18)
Another remarkable statement God made Job is regarding the springs of the sea.
Modern oceanography have made a surprisingly discovery : There are many fresh
water-springs on the _______ floor. Rain-waters flows underground through long
channels out to sea before exiting on the ocean floor. ______ know of these fresh-
waters springs in the sea.
In the area of Tyre and Sidon at a place named Aradus, people lived on a ______.
They solved their drinking-water problem by getting it from freshwater springs in the
ocean. From _____, they laid down turned funnels over the freshwater sources in the
salt-water. The water was driven upward by its own pressure and could then be
caught by means of leather pipe.
Today, fresh water from the sea is ________ in the same off the Poleponnesian coast.
God of course, knew all about freshwater streams and mentioned them to ____ over
4,000 years ago.

VI. HYDROLOGY AND METEOROLOGY .

Hydrology = is the study of _______ its properties, distribution and circulation on the
surface of the land, in the soil and underlying rocks, and in the atmosphere.
Meteorology = the science of ________ forecasting.
A. Designed for life.
The _______ is definitely designed for life. Its atmosphere and hydrosphere are the most
important components in that design. The global _______ of air and water must be in proper
relationship one to another and to the earth in order for life to be maintained on the planet. If
the weights of either air or water were even just a little different than what they are, life on
earth would be impossible. No other planet in the solar system has a significant amount of
________ or _____ .
B. Weather Guessing .
Because of the significance of ________ to life on earth, the science of weather forecasting
“guessing” has developed into a very important field.
Even with the production of highly sophisticated data processing equipment, the inaccuracy
of the weather predictions remains unchanged. Forecasters never positively predict the
weather, but use speculative or gambling term such as “ a 60% chance of rain.”
There is only one who can predict the weather and vividly demonstrates this ability by
providing _______ information concerning meteorology in His Word. (Ps. 135:7)
C. The Water Vapor Cycle .
The concept of the hydrological cycle and its successive phases – Evaporation, Circulation,
Condensation, Precipitation and Run-off; was not understood until recent centuries.
Before the Flood, there had been no _____. (Gen.2:5) The ground was watered by a _____
or dew and by a vast and intricate system of underground pressurize reservoir. Since the
original design for watering the earth was destroyed at the time of the Flood, God devised a
new method. He did energizing the amazing mechanism we call the ______________
Cycle.
