Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation as a Feasible Method of Disinfection

According to Schaffzin, J. K., Wilhite, A. W., Li, Z., Finney, D., Ankrum, A.
L., & Moore, R. (2020), the disinfection process using the ultraviolet light starts by
manuall identifying the priority rooms by IPs each day. The IPs UV team developed a
list of rooms by isolation type and used it to monitor for discharges and disinfect as
many rooms as possible. When ES was notified of a discharge clean request through
automated page from the electronic health record, rooms were identified in real time.
A biohazard emblem was put in priority and isolation rooms in addition to the usual
information.
According to Memarzadeh, F., Olmsted, R. N., & Bartley, J. M. (2010), UVGI
is most typically utilized in the form of manipulating upper-room fixtures that contain
UVGI lamps as well as provide a horizontal UV radiation field above the enclosed
area. These fixtures are intended to neutralize microorganisms that enter the higher
irradiation zone, and their effectiveness is greatly dependent on the airflow field
conditions in the room.
As claimed by Xu, P., Peccia, J., Fabian, P., Martyny, J. W., Fennelly, K. P.,
Hernandez, M., & Miller, S. L. (2003), at 50% relative humidity, all operating lamps
with UVGI system reduced the room-average breathing-zone concentration of
culturable airborne bacteria by 46 to 80% for B. subtilis spores, 83 to 98% for M.
parafortuitum, and 96 to 97% for M. bovis BCG, depending on the ventilation rate.
