Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.
Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.
In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.
Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing
each task.
Thank you.

Let us consider the two figures below:
Figure 1 Figure 2
In figure 1, the center of the circle is at the origin (0,0) and in figure 2,
the center of the circle is not at the origin or C(x,y) denoted by (h,k).
The equation of the circle with center at (h,k) and radius r is given by:
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2.
This is known as the standard form (or center – radius form) of the
equation of a circle.
If the center is at the origin, h = k = 0 and the equation becomes
x2 + y2 = r2.
Expanding the standard equation of the circle into general form
becomes Ax2 + By2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0, A ≠ 0 or x2 + y2 + Cx + Dy + E = 0
Example 1: Find the equation of the circle with the given center C(0,0) and
radius r = 6, then graph the equation.
Solution:
The equation of the circle is
x2 + y2 = 62 or x2 + y2 = 36.
LU_Pre-Calculus_Module2
Example 2: Find the center, radius and equation of the circle B in Figure 3.
Example 4: Find the center, radius and equation of the circle graphed.
Solution: The center of the circle is (2, -3).
The radius of the circle is 3.
From the standard form of a circle,
(x – h)2 + (y – k)2 = r2, we have
(x – 2)2 + [y – (-3)] = 32 is equal to
(x – 2)2 + (y + 3)2 = 9
Note:
In completing the square, divide the middle
term by 2, then square the quotient (3rd term).
Add the quotient to both sides of the equation.

Example 6: Find the center and the radius of the circle with the equation
9(x + 3)2 + 9y2 = 1. Sketch the graph.
Solution:
Convert the coefficients of x2 and y2 to 1.
9(x + 3)2 + 9y2 = 1
1
(x + 3)2 + y2 = 9
1
Thus, the center C(-3, 0) and the radius r = .
