How effective is the Rizal law in instilling patriotism among the Filipino youth

Republic act No. 1425 (Rizal Law) was proposed by Sen. Claro M. Recto and was sponsored by
Sen. Jose P. Laurel who was the chairman of the committee of education. It was signed and approves by
President Ramon Magsaysay on June 12,1956 and started its effectivity on august 16,1956.

The Rizal law is a law based upon the National hero of The Philippines to encourage the youth to
become better citizens. It forces schools to teach the youth about the life of Rizal and his Novels in the
hopes of instilling patriotism among the youth. This law could provide the students with information
about the history of our national hero and his writing which influenced the drive to independence and
made the people of the time more patriotic. As for the effect of the law now, I don’t think it is as effective
as it was then, the reason being is that the flow of information today is much faster and the recent events
makes it hard to be patriotic just because a law wants you to. The Rizal law can be effective if taught at
the early stages of education (elementary to High school) but it is not as effective at higher education
where students have a more independent way of thinking and busy on studying subjects that requires
more time to learn.

In conclusion, The Rizal law may be effective in instilling patriotism if done early enough but it
will be hard to convince students in higher education to become even more patriotic as they are already
aware of what’s happening around them.
