Program B.Tech. (CE) Semester 7 Subject Code PECE-136 Subject Title Design of Steel Structures MST No. 1 Course Coordinator Jagbir Singh Max Marks 24 Time Duration 1 hour 30 minutes Date of MST 27/10/2021 Roll No. Note: Attempt all questions Q. No. Question CO/ Marks RBT Level Q1 Compare five prominent aspects of a bolted and a welded steel connection. CO1, L1 2 Q2 Explain the difference between nominal and gross diameter of a bolt. Also CO2, L2 2 explain the difference between pitch and gauge distance. Q3 Describe various types of failure in a riveted joint with the help of diagrams. CO2, L2 4 Q4 Find bolt value of M30 bolt (grade 4.6), connecting two plates 16 mm thick CO2, L3 4 by double cover butt joint. The thickness of the cover plates is 10 mm. Assume any other value, if required. Q5 A double bolted double cover butt joint is used to connect two plates of 16 CO2, L5 4 mm thickness with chain bolting. The bolts are M20 of grade 4.6, placed at a pitch of 60 mm. Calculate safe load per pitch length and efficiency of the joint. (Note: Safe load = Factored load/1.5) Q6 Design a butt joint to connect two plates 200 x 8 mm (Fe 410 grade) using CO2, L6 8 M16 bolts of grade 4.6. Arrange the bolts to give maximum efficiency.
