This Springdale Park Elementary (SPARK) eligibility team meeting was held via Zoom to
maintain social distancing as well as accommodate endorsement candidates in attendance.
At first, I was disappointed that we were unable to attend a gifted services eligibility team
meeting at our own school, Midtown High School. However, I now feel that I benefited more
from observing an elementary school meeting versus high school since more gifted
identification occurs in younger grades.
The meeting was brief and highly efficient. The team was familiar with the process and the
students' scores and test results were compiled in advance for easy analysis. Shenice White,
the SPARK Gifted Coordinator began by reviewing the process for determining gifted
eligibility. The student in question was a 2nd look candidate who displayed eligibility in
only 2 out of 4 areas in the prior school year. This 3rd grade student was determined
ineligible for gifted services because of a CogAT score less than 96%.
For the 2nd look, the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test was successfully used to determine
eligibility for gifted services due to a high score on this psychological evaluation. To
conclude the meeting, the gifted coordinator gratuitously thanked all those in attendance
for their time. I was impressed by the team's professionalism and skill.
