The questionable beautification of Manila Bay

The infamous Manila bay dolomite beach has been one of the most significant
environmental issues in the country. As a Filipino citizen, I was surprised that there was no
proper research on how it will affect the place where they got the dolomite and its effects in
Manila bay. For years now, Manila Bay has been known for its dirty seaside and foul smell.
Different clean-up drives have happened for the past few years, yet it is still not improving, and
projects like its beautification were not sustainable enough. As much as we would like to protect
Manila bay, it has been almost impossible due to the lack of awareness of the Filipinos regarding
environmental protection and conservation. As a citizen, you would expect that the Philippine
government would take proper action. However, it is disappointing to know that the Department
of Environment and Natural Resources appointees lack an understanding of the science behind
its projects. We can only imagine how much money is spent on these projects that are not helping
and instead, it only worsens the situation.
