BTEC MEDIA
YEAR 13
UNIT 2

Personal Statement

Studying media, I have been able to develop my understanding and ego for this subject and have
decided to take this subject to a higher level at university, allowing me to gain a deeper insight of the
media industry. Media is a way to communicate to people around the world and has a historic
impact today as it allows us to stay relevant in events that may be occurring such as the pandemic.
My main interest for media is learning about the importance of social media. Social media is a way to
network with people and share interests, however, it can affect the wellbeing of an individual as not
everything portrayed on social media is necessarily true, but people will perceive what is being
portrayed as true. This can affect an individual as it can lead to cyber bullying and isolation; this is
the severity media can have on individuals. The reason I want to study media studies is because this
course has pathway for my future career which is the next step of my platform. This has my interest
because I have always been interested in technology and how it has developed throughout even my
generation and how it has developed over the years. This has demonstrated the importance of
networking, communicating, and observing.

I am currently studying BTEC media. Studying this I have learned about the production of my own
text and becoming able to use editing software such as Photoshop and Film cut pro to manipulate
my own photography for a range of purposes. For example, film posters, an advert and magazine
pages.

My previous experience includes a variety of media skills. In 2019 I did work experience at Barclays
bank in Canary Wharf. The experience I did here was communicating with staff members, assisting
staff members with day-to-day duties, assisting with office duties, answering the phone, and
observing and shadowing staff members.

In terms of media experience, I got to work with google and YouTube. This showed me the
difference experience people have when working with media and made me realise I would love to
this a career.

Outside of academics I have been able to have the opportunity to take part within school events
such as Black history month, which consisted of me taking part in creating posters for the event. In
the past year, the media has had a drastic impact in promoting Black Lives Matter as it is important
that we continue to promote these things as they are daily events that people within our society go
through and is crucial to make people aware of this. This demonstrates leadership and teamwork
skills as working with a group of people to ensure that the message could be portrayed in an
appropriate way. Having a part- time job as a waitress, serving customers ensuring all their needs are
being met so the restaurant can be having high standards shows the responsibilities I have, as
working with a team of people as a collective to ensure that the restaurant gets the best reviews
possible, which will allow people to see the reviews through the media, this shows the teamwork,
organisations, and challenging work I have.
