Instructions:
➢ Make sure that you have 4 attached papers (1 question paper and 3 answer sheets)

➢ Any kind of cheating will disqualify your total mark

➢ Do your own work with appreciated neatness
Part-I: Theoretical part [15%]
1. Why do machine elements or parts fail?
2. Define machine element and explain the design process with the help of flow diagram.
3. What are the factors should be considered while selecting the material ?
4. Explain factor of safety? Why the factor of safety for air craft is lower than that of the
normal vehicle?
5. What are the cause of stress concentration? In addition, illustrate how the stress
concentration in a component can be reduced.
6. What does it mean the designation M18x1.5-8d?
Part-II: Calculation part [15%]
7. A solid circular bar carries a maximum compressive load of 500kN. Using the yield stress
as the failure stress, calculate the diameter of the bar for a factor of safety of 3.5. Assume
the yield stress of the bar material is equal to 200Mpa.
8. An eye bolt carries a tensile load of 30 kN. If the tensile stress is not to exceed 150 MPa.
Design an eye bolt and draw a neat proportioned figure for the bolt and indicate all the
dimensions.
