A. LÝ THUYẾT
I. SO SÁNH NGANG BẰNG
1. Với tính từ, trạng từ
* Thể khẳng định
S + V + as + adj/ adv + as...
Ex: - He is as big as his father (is).
- Peter is as tall as I am/ me.
- Mary gets up as early as I do/ me.
* Thể phủ định
S + V + not + so/as + adj/ adv + as...
Ex: - His job is not as/ so difficult as mine.
- The population of Ho Chi Minh city isn't as/ so much as that of Bangkok.
- Susan does not work as/ so efficiently as Linda.
2. Với danh từ
* Với danh từ số nhiều
S + V + as many/few + N(số nhiều) + as...

Ex: - I work as many hours as he does.

- I don’t have as/ so many friends as he does.
- He bought as few books as we did.
* Với danh từ không đếm được
S + V + as much/ little + N(không ơốm được) + as...

Ex: - I don’t make as much money as he does,

- He earns as little money as I do.
II. SO SÁNH HƠN
1. Với tính từ và trạng từ ngắn
S + V + [adj/adv + er] + than...
Ex: - Today it is hotter than it was yesterday.
- Does your mother type faster than your father?
Chú ý:
* Tính từ dài mà tận cùng có các đuôi sau thì ta so sánh như tính từ ngắn vần: ow; er; et; le
Ex: - Tran Hung Dao Street is narrower than Tran Phu Street.
- He is cleverer than his sister.
- Countryside is quieterthan cities.
- This exercise is simpler than the last one.
* Tính từ có hai âm tiết, kết thúc bằng chữ "y" thì bỏ "y", thêm "ier" trong so sánh hơn và "est"
trong so sánh nhất.
- happy -> happier -> happiest
* Những tính từ ngắn kết thúc bằng một phụ âm mà ngay trước nó là nguyên âm duy nhất thì
chúng ta nhân đôi phụ âm rôi thêm "er" trong so sánh hơn và “est” trong so sánh nhất.
- hot -> hotter -> hottest
2. Với tính từ và trạng từ dài
S + V + more adj/ adv + than...
Ex: - Are you more tired than me/I am?
- He sings more beautifully than other competitors.
3. Với danh từ
S + V + more + N + than ...
Ex: - He has collected more stamps than I have.
- They drank more wine than us.
III. SO SÁNH NHẤT
1. Với tính từ và trạng từ ngắn
S + V + the + [adj/ adv + est] + (N)

Ex: - This Street is the longest in our city,.

- She works the hardest in her company
2. Với tính từ và trạng từ dài.
S + V + the + most adj/ adv +
(N)
Ex: - Miss Venezuela is the most beautiful in the Miss World contest.
- He did this work the most successfully.
Chú ý: Tính từ và trạng từ bất quy tắc khi so sánh hơn và so sánh nhất.

3. Với danh từ
S + V + the most + N
Ex: - Susan drank the most beer.
- We have the most books.
IV. SO SÁNH KÉM
1. Với tính từ, trạng từ
S+ V + less + adj/adv + than...

Ex: - She is less intelligent than her sister.

- Miss Viet Nam Is less beautiful than Miss Russia.
2. Với danh từ số nhiều
S + V + fewer + N(Ss nhiêu) + than...

Ex: I have collected fewer stamps than he has.

3. Với danh từ không đếm được
S + V + less + N(Không đếm được) + than...
Ex: Their job allows them less freedom than ours does.
V. SO SÁNH KÉM NHẤT
1. Với tính từ, trạng từ
S + V + the least + adj/adv...

Ex: - She is the least beautiful in her family.

- Of all the musicians, I think he is the least creative.
2. Với danh từ số nhiều.
S + V + the fewest + N(số nhiều)
Ex: Ted scored the fewest goals.
3. Danh từ không đếm được
S + V + the least + N (không đếm
 được)
Ex: This country has the least rain this season.
VI. SO SÁNH KÉP
1. So sánh tăng dần
Để diễn tả mối tương quan nguyên nhân - kết quả của sự biến đổi của hai sự kiện chúng ta dùng
so sánh tăng dần.
1.1. Cùng tính từ hoặc trạng từ
* Tính từ hoặc trạng từ ngắn:
S + V + [adj/adv + er] + and + [adj/adv +
er]
Ex: - It is colder and colder when the winter comes near.
- He plays football worse and worse.
* Tính từ hoặc trang từ dài:
S + V + more and more + adj/adv

Ex: - She speaks English more and more fluently.

- His disease becomes more and more serious.
1.2. Khác tính từ hoặc trạng từ
The + so sánh hơn + S + V, the + so sánh hơn + S + V

Ex: - The richer she is, the more selfish she becomes.
- The harder he studies, the better he gets.
- The more intelligent he is, the lazier he becomes.
- The more expensive the car is, the more comfortable it is.
The more + S + V + the + so sánh hơn + S + V
Ex: - The more she smiles, the more graceful she is.
- The more you study, the smarter you will become.
- The more intelligent a person is, the more he earns.
1.3. So sánh danh từ
The more + N + S + V, the more + N + S + V
Ex: The more books you read, the more knowledge you can get.
S + V + more and more +
N
Ex: Children spend more and more time surfing the Internet.
The + so sánh hơn + S + V, the more + N + S + V
Ex: The better you play, the more money you will receive.
The more + S + V, the more + S + V
Ex: - The more money you earn, the better you live.
- The more he earns, the more he wants.
- The more I hate him, the more he loves me.
2. So sánh giảm dần
S + V + less and less + adj/adv
Ex: - The students are less and less attentive in class.
- The weather is less and less cold.
The less + S + V, the less + S + V
Ex: - The less I live with him, the less I like him.
The less + adj/adv + S + V, the less + adj/adv + S + V
Ex: The less difficult the lesson is, the less hard-working students are.
VII. MỘT SỐ ĐIỂM LƯU Ý.
* Đảo ngữ trong câu so sánh:
Cách đảo ngữ trong câu so sánh hơn/ kém là đảo trợ động từ lên trước chủ ngữ 2. Việc đảo ngữ
này chỉ được thực hiện khi chủ ngữ 2 là danh từ.
S1 + V1+ so sánh hơn/kém + than + be/ do/ have/... + S2
Ex: - Jessica is more interested in Computer Science than is Benjamin.
- Cheetahs run faster than do antelopes.
- Mike is less attentive in class than is Hart.
* So sánh có bội số:
S + V + half/ twice/ three times... as + adj/adv +
as...

Ex: - The price of petrol now is twice as much as it was last year.
- He is 60 years old. His wife is 20 years old. He is 3 times as old as his wife.
- My friend has half as many records now as I had last year.
* Từ chỉ số lượng:
S + V + much/ a lot/ far/ a little/ a bit/... + so sánh hơn + than ...
Ex: - Nam is much taller than me.
 - Susan is much more beautiful than her sister (is).
* Cấu trúc:
Of the two + N(số nhiều), S + V + the + so sánh hơn
Ex: Of the two students, Mark is the more intelligent.
* Để tránh lặp lại danh từ đã nói tới trong so sánh hơn, kém, ngang bằng, dùng that thay thế danh
từ số ít và those thay thế danh từ số nhiều.
Ex: - His salary is higher than that of a nurse.
- The students in my class are as intelligent as those in yours.
* Khi so sánh một người/ một vật với tất cả những người hoặc vật khác phải thêm else sau
anything/ anybody.
Ex: He is smarter than anybody else in the class.
* Một số tính từ khi so sánh hơn và so sánh nhất có thể dùng như tính từ ngắn hoặc như tính từ
dài: quiet/ narrow/ common/ cruel / gentle/ polite/ simple/ stupid/ pleasant/ clever.
- quiet - quieter / more quiet - the quietest / the most quiet
* Một số tính từ không dùng ở dạng so sánh vì bản thân chúng đã mang tính tuyệt đối: complete
(hoàn toàn), favourite, ideal (lý tưởng), unique (duy nhất), excellent, full, empty, perfect, right,
really, extreme (cực độ, tột bậc), supreme (thương hạng), top, absolute (tuyệt đối), prime (xuất
sắc), primary (căn bản).
