“Planning Sheet” Altered and Recycled Book Project

“Altered art is the transformation or making an “alteration” of ordinary, everyday

objects into decorative pieces using a wide variety of different techniques and
materials.”

Planning :
Create a Unified, and sculptural piece of artwork by transforming a book into An Altered Book.

Employ 8+ techniques that you find in research. (for example painting, cutting, melting, bending,
sewing, collaging, etc). See more examples in the slideshow.

Keep elements and principles in consideration as you design, and execute the changes to your
book. Consider themes to portray.

Themes can help Unify your ideas… a theme could be about you, someone you love, or place
that you have been, a hobby or somewhere you wish you could travel. See more examples in
the slideshow shared in class and in your research below.

Be mindful of good craftsmanship.

Be Three Dimensional in several of your alterations.

Phase I __/10 pts Visual research

- Search by keyword Altered or Recycled books, do an image search to find
inspiration for your own altered book.
- Paste in 10 images and write what you could borrow next to each (ie: folded
edges like theirs, painted sky like theirs, cut drawer like theirs) .

Phase II ___ / 5pts SKETCHES-

Draw out several pages- plan themes for your book on what you may add.
Think of items you may use ...watercolor paint, crayons, colored pencils, markers, yarn, glue,
cardboard, colored paper, fabrics, fake flowers. string, photos,newspaper, magazines, etc.
Sketch Two- four themed pages - on a separate paper you
photograph and attach to this assignment draw out TWO
pages for your own altered book.
- Sketch several pages
- Be sure to use 8+ ideas for altering 2-4 pages, and possibly the cover.
- List your eight+ varied techniques and explain with some notes on
materials you’ll use.
