RLT200 English

The course aims to provide understanding of basic control system concepts, applications of control technology, feedback principles, modeling dynamic systems using differential equations, and solving basic control problems using models, block diagrams and time analysis. The course covers feedback control systems including modeling and time domain analysis, representation of physical systems as differential equations, and reducing block diagrams to transfer functions.

Course Objective

After completing the course, the student should be able to show:

• understanding of basic concepts and terminologies in control technology,
• knowledge of different applications of control technology, especially mechanical,
electrical and computer technology applications,
• understanding of how the feedback principle works and how it can improve a system's
static and dynamic properties,
• knowledge of how, based on a linear differential equation, a dynamic model of a
system can be developed
• knowledge of how basic control problems can be solved with the help of models,
block diagram transformation and time analysis.

Contents
This is a basic control system course, and the focus will be on the feedback control which
includes modelling and time domain analysis the systems. Starting lectures of the course will
help understand the basic components of a control system followed by the effect of the
feedback. Examples of representation of the physical systems into linear ordinary differential
equations, will be taught. In addition to the modelling, reduction of block diagrams into
transfer functions will be practiced.

Automatic Control Systems, 10th Edition, M F Golnaraghi and Benjamin C Kuo, McGraw-
Hill Education, New York, N.Y. 2017.
