TECHNICAL Prenat cyan) ALERT pm tad CONSULTIN VICES DEPARTN SUBJECT: APCS-26 MASTIC EPOXY ALERT NO. COATINGS MUST BE APPLIED IN TWO COATS 004/04 AT 250 MICRONS MINIMUM TOTAL DRY FILM | THICKNESS IF USED AS PROTECTIVE _ COATING FOR NEW STRUCTURAL STEEL SUMMARY: APCS-26 coatings have been used satisfactorily for maintenance coating jobs, where film thickness of 125-200 microns is sufficient to reinstate existing and sound old coatings. Using the same film thickness and the same surface preparation for new structural steel coating jobs, APCS-26 exhibited premature failures, in particular, where the structural steais were near offshore incations, e.9. Ras Tanura, Qatif, Berri and Safaniyah. Low film thickness (125 microns) of self priming mastic epoxy and poor surface preparation by commercial blasting proved to be insufficient corrosion protection for new structural steel RECOMMENDATIO! Whenever self priming mastic epoxy coatings (APCS-26) are selected for new structural steel, they must be applied in two coats at 250-275 microns total dry film thickness. The surface preparation of the new structural steel should be in accordance with SSPC-SP10 or better with a minimum surface profile of Sa 2.5 (average. 60 micron). These changes are mandatory requirement and should be applied for all projects. The changes will be incorporated in the next revision of SAES-H-001. if you have any questions regarding this technical alert, please contact Fikry Barouky ‘on 872-5116 or Saleh A.
