Introductory Message
Welcome to Health 8 Quarter 4!

The Learning Activity Sheet is a product of the collaborative efforts of the

Schools Division of Capiz and DepEd Regional Office VI - Western Visayas through
the Curriculum and Learning Management Division (CLMD). This is developed to
guide the learning facilitators (teachers, parents and responsible adults) in helping the
learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Basic Education Curriculum.

The Learning Activity Sheet is self-directed instructional materials aimed to

guide the learners in accomplishing activities at their own pace and time using the
contextualized resources in the community. This will also assist the learners in
acquiring the lifelong learning skills, knowledge and attitudes for productivity and
employment.

For learning facilitator:

The Health Activity Sheet will help you facilitate the teaching-learning
activities specified in each Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC) with minimal
or no face-to-face encounter between you and the learner. This will be made available
to the learners with the references/links to ease the independent learning.

For the learner:

The Music Activity Sheet is developed to help you continue learning even if
you are not in school. This learning material provides you with meaningful and
engaging activities for independent learning. Being an active learner, carefully read
and understand the instructions then perform the activities and answer the
assessments. This will be returned to your facilitator on the agreed schedule.

I. Learning Competency with Code:

Discusses strategies in the prevention and control of cigarette smoking
and drinking alcoholic beverages (H8S-IV-h-33)
• applies resistance skills in situations related to cigarette and alcohol
use;
• follows policies and laws in the family, school and community
related to cigarette and alcohol use

II. Background Information for Learners: (Essential Understanding(s):

There are various and healthy ways to get rid of smoking and alcoholism.
These range from simple immersion to hobbies like interactive and board games,
sports, and joining clubs of interest.
It is said that only a person can help himself. Prevention is still better
than cure. That is why a person must have a strong foundation of resistance
skills. These skills involve getting the courage to refuse the temptation of alcohol
and cigarette consumption. These skills also involve advocacy on the prevention
of alcohol addiction. After all, it is always our choice. Alcohol is just a colorless,
bitter – tasting liquid that we can avoid drinking.

Resistance Skills – one of the techniques in saying NO to smoking and

alcoholic drinking. The following are the steps to practice resistance skills:

Step 1: Tell the problem.

When friends ask you to try smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages,
just tell them that………….
“That is wrong,” or smoking is bad,” or “that is prohibited,” or “Drinking
alcohol is against the law and school rules.

Step 2: Predict what will happen.

Ask the following:
• “Could anyone be harmed if you do it? How?”
• “You may get into trouble”
• You and others will feel bad.”

1
Step 3: Stop and Say No.
How will you stop and say NO?.
• Simply say, “No, I am not interested.”
• Change the topic. Say “I am going to the park, you can come with me.”
• Tell the truth. Say “I hate smoking, It makes my breath smell bad; or
“I’m too young to die.”
• Joke about it. Say “My parents are good at smelling. I won’t get passed
them, or “Are you really ready to die? I’m not!”
• Give reasons, “I don’t smoke. It’s bad for the health.” “I’m pro-
environment, Smoking makes the air dirty,”
• Tell a story. Say, “My father got really sick because of smoking. It was
painful’ or “My grandmother died from smoking. I don’t want that to
happen to me or you!
• Walk away if you can’t change your friends mind.

Prevention and Control of Cigarette Smoking and Drinking Alcoholic Beverages

Problem regarding cigarette smoking and alcoholism is now multi-faceted that it

needs multi-disciplinary solutions. This means that the problem is complicated.
The occurrence of the different problems regarding cigarette smoking and
alcoholism could be prevented through the cooperation of the family, the school,
the community and the individual himself.

1. Personal Responsibility. Prevention against cigarette smoking and drinking

alcoholic beverages is the responsibility of every individual. He should impose on
himself the values of self-respect and maintain healthy lifestyle. He should also
exhibit courage to face problems and take a course of action other that change
to than cigarette and alcohol use.

2. Family Responsibility. The family plays an important role in keeping away its
members from smoking and drinking intoxicating liquor. Most of the youth
addicted to cigarette come from broken families or lack parents’ care and
attention. It is therefore, a primary responsibility of the family to maintain a
harmonious relationship among members and to create a happy and peaceful
environment.
Parents should also give responsibility to their children according to their
capability coupled with proper guidance and supervision. This helps the youth to
be responsible in all their undertaking.

3. School Responsibility. Teachers are said to be the second parents while the
school is the second home. Therefore, the school should provide the needs of
every student as parents provide the needs of their children.

2
4. Community Responsibility. Civic and professional organizations in the
community should work cooperatively in providing alternatives to keep the youth
from smoking and drinking liquor. The community should help establish
wholesome activities like counselling and educating the youth about the ill effects
of smoking and drinking alcoholic beverages.

Policies and Laws Regarding Cigarette Smoking

• Republic Act No. 9211, otherwise known as The Tobacco Regulation Act of
2003 is the law governing tobacco production, distribution, and use.

Philippine Clean Air Act of 1999.
