Project Group Contract & Building Knowledge of the Field

Summative Assessment 10%

A group contract is a mutual agreement made by all the members of a group to set norms for
collaboration throughout the project and to start planning your writing.

Objectives:

● To set specific rules for participation, cooperation and communication throughout


the development of your project.

● To choose specific materials (articles, videos, podcasts, infographics, etc.) in


order to analyze and to be used during the writing process of the project.

● To explore the global issue chosen by your team.

● To create a glossary of terms with definitions about your chosen topic.

Instructions

Before:

Contact your classmates via email or WhatsApp and set a date so you all can meet through
a video call.

During your meeting:

Discuss each section and fill in the required information.

It Depends on the situation that any member has, the most time is Diana, but
in any case can be Felipe or Angélica.

It's necessary that they:

-respond to messages on time

-are committed to the times

-listen to the opinion of other members and work with assignments

3. Your group project

● What topic will you develop in your project?

Illegal mining

● Why did you choose that particular topic? (Provide at least 3 reasons)

-It´s an issue not only involves the environment but also society in the
colombian case
-the exploitation of land is an interesting topic to approach from science
(specially geology)

-The need to present a relevant social and environmental issue for a country
like Colombia but in english.

Glossary

Lucrative: producing a great deal of profit.

Organized crime: Organized crime is a category of transnational, national, or local


groupings of highly centralized enterprises run by criminals to engage in illegal activity, most
commonly for profit.
Degradation: in this case, the act or process of degrading: environmental degradation, the
gradual degradation of organic matter, etc.

Contamination: the act of contaminating or polluting; including (either intentionally or


accidentally) unwanted substances or factors

Biodiversity: the variety of plant and animal life in the world or in a particular habitat, a high
level of which is usually considered to be important and desirable.

Misrule: Bad government that shows no justice or fairness.

Socio-environmental conflicts: conflicts between social groups due to the occupied space
where great aquiferous, mineral or fertile riches can be found for cultivation.

Environment: the complex of physical, chemical, and biotic factors (such as climate, soil,
and living things) that act upon an organism or an ecological community and ultimately
determine its form and survival.

Business: is defined as an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial,


industrial, or professional activities. In this case (illegal mining) it can mean mostly shady or
illegal business in companies or individuals.

Monopolize:(of an organization or group) obtain exclusive possession or control of (a trade,


commodity, or service).

Violence: behavior involving physical force intended to hurt, damage, or kill someone or
something.

Community: a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic
in common.

Control: Law enforcement.
