PURPOSE OF MEDICATION

Expected Pharmacological Action Therapeutic Use

-Interferes with the functions of WBC's in -Decreased pain and inflammation in acute
initiating and perpetuating the inflammatory attacks of gout
response to monosodium urate crystals -Reduced number of attacks of gout and
familial Mediterranean fever

Complications Medication Administration

-Diarrhea -Nausea -Vomiting -Abdominal Pain -Give with food to decrease GI
-Leukopenia -Thrombocytopenia distress
-Peripheral Neuritis -Alopecia -Aplastic Anemia -Available in Tablet & Capsule

Contraindications/Precautions
-Contraidicated in pts with Hypersensitivity
-Do not give concurrently with Cyclosporines or Ranolazine
-Use caution during pregnancy or with Renal or Hepatic Nursing Interventions
impairment -Monitor baseline & period. CBC
-May cause false-positive
results for urine hemoglobin
-Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit
juice during therapy
-Do not confuse colchicine with

-Monitor I&O
-These drugs increase serum levels of Colchicine and
-Encourage increased fluids
cause Toxicity: Clarithromycin, Ketoconazole, Ritonavir,
Diltiazem, Erythromycin, Fluconazole, Verapamil.
-Do not combine with Grapefruit Juice or Alcohol

-Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit
juice during therapy
Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Review Medication Schedule
-Instruct pt to report muscle pain or
-Decrease in pain and swelling in affected joints within 12 weakness, tingling or numbness in
