FACULTY OF BIOMEDICAL
ENGINEERING
ii
ABSTRACT
The Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences & Technology are proposing the
construction of a new faculty of Biomedical Engineering. Therefore, we have made a detailed
feasibility report on the development of the department. The new department of Biomedical
Engineering at GIK will have an objective of imparting quality education in the multidisciplinary
fields at both graduate and postgraduate levels. This new faculty of Biomedical Engineering will
support the advancement and application of the University’s initiatives. It will significantly
enhance the research infrastructure, bring together faculty, and research groups involved in the
initiatives of Molecular Biomedical Engineering. However, little research has been undertaken to
get the information about the pros and cons of the new field in accordance with the environment
of GIK. Therefore, to address the potential issues, the Rector of the institute is taking the bold
steps to build the visionary, interdisciplinary educational and research environment needed to
achieve breakthrough contributions in fields such as engineering human tissues, new
pharmaceuticals based on RNA enzymes and aptamers, and understanding the genetic basis for
numerous diseases. The core aim of this report is to elaborate the feasibility of a completely new
and different department in the GIK Institute. The findings of this empirical research helped us to
highlight that, Islamabad which is the nearest capital to the institute, is home for approximately
300 biosciences firms and is one of the fastest growing city for life sciences and engineering
industries. Between 1998 and 2003, the number of companies grew by 35%, outpacing the
national growth rate. GIKI total bioscience academic research funding from KPK government is
around $300 million initially and will grew up to 31% once the faculty is established. Also, the
research project will identify areas for future research and several key recommendation to guide
current students to become “world citizens.” The University will have to focus on major strategic
initiatives that will increase its visibility and distinguish it as the leader in global education.

Chapter # 01
INTRODUCTION
Engineering itself is an innovative field, the origin of ideas leading to everything from
automobiles to aerospace, skyscrapers to sonar. Biomedical engineering focuses on the
advances that improve human health and health care at all levels.Biomedical engineers work in
a wide variety of settings and disciplines. There are opportunities in industry for innovating,
designing, and developing new technologies; in academia furthering research and pushing the
frontiers of what is medically possible as well as testing, implementing, and developing new
diagnostic tools and medical equipment; and in government for establishing safety standards for
medical devices. Many biomedical engineers find employment in cutting-edge start-up
companies or as entrepreneurs themselves.
Tissue and stem cell engineers are working towards artificial recreation of human organs,
aiding in transplants and helping millions around the world live better lives. Experts in medical
devices develop new implantable and external devices such as pacemakers, coronary stents,
orthopaedics implants, prosthetics, dental products, and ambulatory devices. Clinical engineers
work to ensure that medical equipment is safe and reliable for use in clinical settings. Biomedical
engineering is an extremely broad field with many opportunities for specialization.
2
1.2 Background of the study:
Biomedical engineering being unknown made scientists and engineers not to possess common
backgrounds even in the late 1800s or before the Second World War. Some objectives must be
concerned i.e., if we ponder over the definition of a biomedical engineer, it is noticed that the
chemical and agricultural engineers, concerned with fermentation processes, so far have been
performing the job of a biomedical engineer, as well as collaborating with biologists and their
systems. Also, its rules and concepts are also applied by the civil engineers doing specialization
in sanitisation. Over the years, the medical profession has also been beneficial for many
mechanical engineers for the evolution of artificial branches. Air-conditioning is in fact another
field of biomedical engineering.
Nowadays, biology and engineering have an especially important linkage, such as in medical and
various other life carrying fields. Moreover, due to an increasing consciousness of the necessity
for interconnection among the engineers and their relationship with medical sciences, an
engineer is fully capable of playing several roles of biomedical engineering, including human
medicine, and hence, taking in concern the contributions Biomedical engineering and sciences
serving solution for engineering troubles.
According to Times there are less than one hundred thousand registered biomedical engineers
worldwide. Whereas in Pakistan this engineering course is offered by only two other institutes
(NUST and UET Lahore). Thus, there is a huge demand for such engineers not only in Pakistan
but also worldwide.
1. Bioinformatics - uses CS and biology knowledge. For example, using coding languages
such as python or R to solve human genomics problems.
2. Biomechanics - making human prosthetics such as knee or hip implants.
3. Biomaterials - researching new materials that are compatible with the body
4. Neural engineering - lots of human physiology involved here regarding the brain and the
nervous system. Involves both stem cell experiments and a CS component to it if you are
going in the direction of brain-computer interfaces.
5. Biosensors - about building sensors that can answer help detect problems in the body like
heart rate monitors, glucose monitors etc. Have both an ECE and a CS component to it.

1.6 Significance of report:
The Twenty first century is rightfully called the period of life sciences. Gradually the World is
dynamic globally and the period has the appliance of knowledge in each ground of science
particularly biomedical science. Other scientific breakthroughs in the industrial spheres and
medical are expected to a great extent of funded research programs underway in most of the
states of the world. Deepening in the fields of medicine and biology, such as anthropomorphic
ordination combination and field work to build cells and organ functions, have conduct to a
critical modification in many commercial parts and improved the biological engineering
occupation. The age of medical specialty remains within the immature phase, ascending steady
during the time that we tend to proceed to flourish the sector of biomedical Engineering. The
developing countries like Pakistan are facing difficulties to deliver the proper health treatment in
health care centers. The system of health in Pakistan is presently researching many
transformations appearing in the district, federal and provincial level notably to enhance the
consignment of medical services to the society. Although, our society’s medical service
providers i.e., physicians, surgeons, and others toil to deliver life-improving and life-saving
service to thousands of Pakistanis but, the quality level and potency of responsibility fluctuate
over the nation.
CONCLUSION
Chapter overview:
This chapter concludes the reports and presents the report findings and its discussion to ensure
that the objectives of the research are achieved. Furthermore, the recommendations are discussed
at the end of chapter.
Report Findings:
Is Biomedical Engineering a suitable path for developing a good career?
When you step into any type of engineering field you should have to develop a keen knowledge
of science in such a way that your mind permits you to analyze complications of an upgrade
technical level. To take admission in biomedical engineering you should have a knowledge of
life sciences and medical knowledge to differentiate the context on which you are going to work.
The key role of Biomedical Engineering is to provide welfare to the people as such innovative
ideas are introduced which are beneficial for human health and life. There are numerous
examples which include such creations like engineered tissue skin, joint replacement implants,
cardiac defibrillators, biomedical imaging, and cardiac pacemakers. If such things are interest of
your then not opting Biomedical Engineering is a bad choice.
The building is designed with the quality material and advanced technology. Also, selection of
the construction materials, labor, and machineries, guarantees steady performance, which tells
that reliability of the biomedical engineering department’s building and would be sustainable at
least till two decades. Besides the normal processing ability of the infrastructure, new department
will also have all the labs including machines for the specializations provided by the institute.
Recommendations:
The following are the recommendations for the Report: Sprouting the field of Biomedical
engineering in GIKI.
Ultimately, the future of biomedical engineering is tied to both the issues and obstacles we
discover and advances and achievements in fields like chemistry, materials science, and biology.
Just as in most other fields, interdisciplinary means that innovation originates from many
directions at the same time.
