READING PASSAGE 06

1 Sign language is a language for deaf people. Deaf people often use sign languages because they cannot hear any

sounds. They do not understand anything when someone speaks to them. They can use sign languages more easily

than spoken languages. They use their hands to communicate. Some deaf people also look at a speaker’s lips and

understand a spoken language. This is called “lip-reading”. Very few people can lip-read well because it is hard to

learn. So most deaf people use a sign language.

2 People sometimes learn a sign language from their family, especially if their parents are deaf. But most deaf children

have hearing parents. Their parents use spoken languages so they must learn a sign language from other deaf

people. They meet other deaf people at school. Sometimes deaf people go to a special school to learn a sign

language or buy a sign language workbook with an interactive DVD.

3 Sign languages are not new. In old books, we see stories about deaf people and sign language. In the western

world, people did the first research studies on sign languages in the 17 th century. In 1620, in Spain, the priest, Juan

Pablo Bonet, wrote a book about teaching deaf people to speak. Bonet created the language of signs. Then, a

French educator called Abbé Charles- Michel de l-Épée designed a finger-spelling alphabet in the 18th century. After

Épée created the alphabet, he became very famous. People started to call him the “Father of the Deaf”. Today,

many people still use his alphabet in many countries.

4 There is not one single sign language for all deaf people around the world. There are many sign languages. Usually

there is a different sign language in each country, but these sign languages are not related to spoken languages.

They are independent. According to research, there are about 137 sign languages in the world. These sign

languages are not totally different from each other. They can have very similar grammar rules and alphabets. But

they are not the same. Different sign languages can use different hand shapes to make words and sentences.
