([WHQGHGFRXUVHQDPH Architectural History: Visions on the City
/HDUQLQJRXWFRPHV To acquire knowledge and understanding of methodological, design­
methodological, theoretical and possibly also utopian visions developed,
applied and described in the professional practice of and/or reflection on
town planning and urban design.
2YHUYLHZ This course unit focuses on the city as object of design and, more
specifically, as a critical­theoretical reflection. Visions, ideas,
hypotheses, explanations and predictions, and their translation into
concrete design initiatives will be discussed in the lectures, a number of
which will be given by guest lecturers. The meant visions were put
forward by designers (civil engineers, architects, and urban planners),
users, commissioning parties (government institutions, private
initiatives) and viewers (academics, reviewers, critics). Visions may
relate to the city as a whole or to parts of the city, to a specific design
style, or to phenomena such as hygiene, public space, the relationship
between the city and the countryside, conservation versus demolition,
urban renewal versus restructuring, private commissions, etc. This
course unit will pay attention to the basic rules that architecture and
urban planning (in their relation to the city as a design object) should
ideally satisfy. Texts and statements by relevant
authors/designers/commissioning parties will be used as a starting point
for critical analyses (in the seminars).
Students will prepare the one day excursion within their working group,
and will present in situ.
